I just picked up a ZyXEL NBG419N. They are $29.99 from buy.com. It seems a good candidate for DD-WRT since it's very similar to the Buffalo WHR-G300N, it may even run the WHR-G300N's DD-WRT as-is since all internal chips seem identical. However, its stock firmware seems very good with AP client and repeater features.

FCC ID: I88NBG419N

CPU: Ralink RT3052F
RAM: 32MB (2x IC42S16800E-6TL)
Flash: 4MB (29LV320DBTI-70G)

Other nice features:
- RP-SMA connectors for both external antennas.
- Easy to disassemble, housing held together with only 2 Phillips screws, no snaps or clips.
- 4-pin serial header pre-installed.
- Small heatsink on CPU.
- Solder pads for JTAG (no header).

Internals look identical to the FCC ID link I posted above (click the FCC ID, then go to Internal Photos).
Unfortunately, I'm probably not keeping this router (poor range) so I don't want to modify it for JTAG.

I'm curious if WHR-G300N's DD-WRT can work in it. It looks like every single chip is the same between the two. Maybe if I can boost Xmit power beyond defaults, it can improve the range. I would just be worried about being able to go back to stock if necessary.

Is there any way to tell if stock FW is encrypted? It is here: http://www.zyxel.com/web/download.php?FileName=200901150854332009011508490020041105154230_20090521_1.00(BFQ.0)C0-NBG-419N_V1.00(BFQ.0)C0.zip&BuildFlag=head_quarter. I did look at it in a hex editor, but nothing in there made sense to me.

Took a look at it because I'm considering buying this router as it has good specs and is relatively cheap.

A quick glance shows its booting up the linux kernel, so hopefully the source code should be available somewhere.

I'd love to see if DD-WRT can run on this router as well.

I have one, but it doesn't yield its secrets very willingly. I can see what I think is a flash chip on top, then there's a chip with some sort of plate glued on, and two shielded boxes. There are what I think are two RAM chips at the bottom.

Here's the info on the router
http://www.us.zyxel.com/Products/details.aspx?PC1IndexFlag=20040520161256&CategoryGroupNo=2F39BF6F-E115-4047-A6C9-36833483A7CA

Seems they are open source friendly.

They allow people to have access to their source code.

I'm going to purchase one and hope for dd-wrt support Razz

Well in the first line of the firmware file it says Linux Kernel Image so it's running embedded Linux of some sort.

I also just purchased this router from Buy.com for $30 shipped. I'm planning to use it as an access point (keep my current router for DHCP and all that other stuff), but would love to replace the whole thing completely with this router and dd-wrt.

Does the dd-wrt team need any specs/photos pulled from the router? I'll be getting it next week and I can take it apart and do other sorts of hackery to it, if need be.
