Is there a way to unbrick this router?
Tried the tftp method until i threw the thing across the room. My experience with this thing is "no".
I have semi-bricked this router due to incompatible firmware many many times. I have always been able to unbrick it within 5 secs. It's impossible to brick it if you don't mess with the bootloader.
1. Download dd-wrt(.)com/routerdb/de/download/NETCORE/NW618/PB20/dd-wrt.v24_std_generic.bin/3751 or which ever flavor you like.
2. Manually assign an IP of 192.168.1.5 and a subnet of 255.255.255.0
3. Using tftp that's built in to XP, I entered this command at the command prompt where my firmware is located, but didn't hit enter yet.
Code:
tftp -i 192.168.1.1 put dd-wrt.bin
(renamed the bin for simplicity)
4. Plugged in the power adapter, hit enter in my command prompt window after about 2-3 secs, you have about 5secs after plugging in the power before the transfer starts.
Yep, I've been doing that.... about 200 times by now. Even tried a couple different pc's... XP pro, XP home, win 2k.
Blammo. Nuttin. I was able to tftp the firmware with no issues with my Asus router I just got... so I'm thinking this thing is full-on, brick and mortar, in need of jtag. :/
But what about the reset button on the unit? Hold it in forever? Don't touch it? Hold it in then release at a specific time?

After flashing it 200 times you still have not had a chance to try those 3 options ? _________________ http://69.175.13.131:8015 Streaming Week-End Disco. Station Ripper V 1.1 will do.

Are you able to get some ping reply's during the first boot?
You don't need to do anything with the reset button, plug the router in, then hit enter a couple seconds later.
i don't think anything is blocking port 69, which is why I tried it on a couple other computers. All my Windoze installs are clean and fast, with minimal software.
I have a feeling this thing is too far gone, and since it's a $30 router, not really worth it. I was able to tftp the firmware to the asus router with no issues, with the same computer, so i know the computer is alright.
It will not unbrick. Tried it on another pc. So, I think I'll just forget about trying. I can use it for parts at least. $30 lesson learned, avoid rosewill, the Asus one flashed perfectly.
Epic Fail #2. Got another router from newegg. Did the same tftp transfer like I did on the Asus one, bricked again. That's it. I'm done with the stupid rosewill routers.
Got an error the first time I sent the firmware and that's all she wrote.
I am a newb when it comes to ddwrt. and this is my 2nd post? But I would like to add info I have found while playing with this router that I purchased just for ddwrt + autoap.
I have made some head way on un-bricking this device (in my mind anyways. 3 days of not being able to)
I really suck at writing tutorials but I will try.
you may need to do a 30-30-30 before all of this. from my experince a 30-30-30 does not reset ddwrt firmware when installed... it totally screws up the whole thing.
I first set computer to static ip of 192.168.1.33
Download stock rosewill firmware as noted multiple times in this thread, save on desktop.
Open command window, enter "ping 192.168.1.1 -t" , don't press enter yet.
Open another window, enter "cd desktop" press enter. and then enter "tftp -i 192.168.1.1 put Rosewill_RNX_GX4_V1.1.08.trx" (you may need to enable tftp in vista or windows 7, i did for vista) don't press enter yet.
Go back to the ping window and press enter so it starts.
Click on the tftp window.
Plug in router.
Watch ping screen until you see reply from 192.168.1.1 with ttl of 100.
When you see the first reply, hit enter on the tftp screen, a few seconds later you should see transfer successful...
I have also had success using the cisco tftp server. Sometime first having to use the cmd window with tftp and then also have to use cisco afterwards to get it back. you can get info on using the cisco part on the first page of this thread.
I have done this like 20 times now.... the generic ddwrt micro and normal sizes seem to work but i get bad flashes a lot... my bad probably. and i stil cannot get autoap to work. cannot get auto ap built in firmware to flash, and cannot get router to connect to access points wirelessly when script is used at startup... oh well.
I guess y'all must not be as good at brickin' yer sh... as I am. I appreciate the ideas, but this thing is bricked beyond repair.
Interesting ping pattern I get, tho.

I really hope it doesn't matter what lan port I use to connect to this thing, too.. been trying all of them, ya know, cuz i'm at my wits end. Rosewill says I can RMA it, meh.
From what I have read online, if you are getting replys you are not bricked.
I have gotten mine bricked to the point where i only get 2 or 3 ping replys on startup and the rest are destination net unreachables. Which from what i have read is really bad for other routers....
Coming from a newb again... that spent like 10 hours learning how to unbrick, keep trying the tftp or the cisco tftp server. or send it back.
Yea, I've been all over the intarwebnet looking for ideas on this thing. When yours was hosed, did the power light do a steady/flashing/steady/flashing kinda pattern?
I'm going to avoid rosewill stuff in the future, the Asus one I flashed works perfect.
I am sorry but I do not remember. I never used the lights for troubleshooting it, other than holding the reset button on power up. at that point all the ligths go solid for a second and the status light will flash as long as you hold the reset button in.
