What's a safe range to set port forwarding for bittorenting in? I'm thinking that between the 50000-60000 range.

Is this a large enough range to fit 4-5 people who torrent in?

That range is more than sufficient. BitTorrent only uses one port per instance so all you have to do is to make sure that each user picks one for themselves that is in the range and doesn't conflict with any of the other 4 or so people.
