What build are you using?

I just flashed the 06/30/10 build - 14684

I seem to be getting some good wireless with that one

http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/other-downloads?path=others%2Feko%2FBrainSlayer-V24-preSP2%2F06-30-10-r14684%2FWHR-G300N%2F

Direct link to the newest build.

VPN or normal build loads just fine.

I suggest a Reset to Defaults when flashing!

Remember - if using Wireless-N - use WPA2-AES only!
Also - recommend setting NG-Mixed, not N-Only mode.

Can you ping the router?
I am on build 14684 and have similar problem.
Even though I got 3 bars out of 5 in Windows, the wireless connection isn't stable, I got quite a lot of ping loss between the wireless client and G300N.

Why is NG-mixed the recommended setting? The rate dropped to 54Mbps when I chose it.

You would need to do more testing.

All my WHR-G300N's have had external antennas placed on them.

They all get good signal and I do get N speeds using NG-Mixed.

If you set it to NG-Mixed and it drops to 54Mbps, see what stability is like.

If its running stable at that rate, your signal may be too weak to maintain N-speeds.

Move the devices closer and do N-only testing.

Does NG-mixed mode means the G300N will choose the most 'suitable' rate?
Do you get 300Mbps with NG-mixed?
I am going to test its stability now, will tell you the results here Very Happy

You CAN get up to 300mbps using NG-Mixed mode as long as no G clients are currently connected.

Realistically, you will never hit 300mbps, usually around 270mbps is max.

Wireless-N has a lot of overhead for both sending and receiving.

I've tested NG-mixed and Mixed mode.
The ping time is shorter on NG-Mixed, but both has ping drops.

I don't have any wireless G clients, one of my clients runs 150Mbps N though. However, every time when I chose NG-mixed, the rate drop immediately to 54Mbps.
