hahah... sorry about the quality of the pictures.

i love my 8900 to death, but it cant do *everything*.

i'll try to get some better quality pictures eventually.

Also, i ordered that cable Smile should be here any day now.

Btw, LOM. Thank you so much for sticking with me through this. It really is nice to come to a forum where the senior members don't shy away from helping the ignorant who are willing to learn. Thank you.

Also, something else just occurred to me.

the 10 solder pads here:

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/4065/img00010201005161100.th.jpg

(remove the th in the URL for full size)

could those be a JTAG port?

if so, how can i tell/test?

I have a (very ghetto) jtag cable that ive used to work with my wrt45g-TM

i'm sure i can get your nvram and cfe dump if i can get this hooked up to jtag.

Those 10 pads are likely the jtag port but it looks like a non-standard pinout so will be of no use for you, will be almost impossible to find out which pin is which.

Normally, odd numbered pins are jtag signals and even numbered pins are ground (except for some cases when one of the even numbered is an additional jtag signal pin).

I thought for once that the pcb screen print had got mirrored but there is as far as I can see one pad without a trace on the even numbered side so it still doesn't fit any known jtag pinout.

Stick to the serial connection, it is much better.
Jtag is completely worthless when it comes to giving you information of what happens in your router, what happens during boot.
Everyone should consider serial connection for debricking his router long before thinking about jtag..

what do you mean about serial vs jtag?

Ive got a router (wrt45g-TM) that hasnt worked in some time. one of the pins on the jtag port has shorted out.

as far as i remember (its been bricked for quite a while) the device does not respond to pings and all the lights remain on.

I think there is a working serial port on the device. Once my cable comes, ill try to take a look.

EDIT:

the wrt45g-TM powers up, but all the LAN lights are lit and the power LED blinks. ASAIK, that means that the device is bricked and i will *need* jtag to fix it.

problem is that the jtag port is a bit destroyed since thats where the short occurred.

I take it that the device isn't recoverable via serial?

Wooo Hooo!

Data cable came in the mail today!

I'll hook it up and give it a test later this evening.

In the mean time, can you give me some instructions on how i can back up the NVRAM and CFE via serial?

i thought that was jtag only.

Ok, so i opened it back up... this time with better pics and a multimeter.

the cross pad is GROUND.

here is the clearest pic, with the voltages of each pin.

I have overlayed the voltages from each pin on the images.

So, which is which, do you think?

I would take an educated GUESS that the left pin is vcc, and the other two with power are tx and rx. WAIT FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO POST before trying.

See where the trace from each goes too.

That pict is way too small to be useful.

Thats what i was thinking as well.

I switched a few settings on my camera around; these should be much clearer.

Im thinking that the outter most are the 3.3 and GND.

the pin closest to the outermost 3.3V is going to be the TX.
the pin closest to the ground is the RX.

But why is the RX powered as well as the TX?

Also, you need to remove the ".th" from the image URL.

once you remove that, the images should be plenty big Smile

I think when I was monkeying with my serial a day or two ago, both tx and rx had power. But I still suggest you WAIT for Barryware, LOM, or Redhawk to pipe in.

Having vcc at one end and neutral at the other is common, however.

Those pict are still postage stamp size for me.

http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/3104/fronty.png

http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/5600/rearz.png

and of course the two i posted *just* above. of course, remove the .th from the URL to *not* get a thumbnail.

WooHoo. My initial guess was right. Rx is right next to the ground pin. TX is the pin next to VCC.

At this point, the router has booted up and is working perfectly.

if you hit enter, you can enter a shell, the output of which will be posted in just a second.

Seriously.. I have a terminal with root access.

What commands do you need me to execute?

What information do you need in order to get DDWRT working on this thing?

If you press TAB twice, it will list you all commands. See if there is command like "outputimage" or something like that (backupimage, backupflash..., I can't remember now...) - then set tftpd client/server on your pc and use this command to get image of flash. You should get file of exactly 4MB.

If you can get it and send it to me, I will have support really soon.
