Hi, I am new to DD-WRT. While going through dd-wrt.com , I am seeing conflicting flash requirement for Netgear WNR2000 V2 .
In the below webpage, the second step download link does not work. And also seems to be a quite old flash.
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_WNR2000V2

But if I try to find the flash in the "router database" link, I find below version but that is more than 3392 Kb limit this router has:
dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNR2000v2.chk

I do not want to end up bricking my router. Please help me to get the latest working flash for this router.

Thanks

I fixed the link. Use that build.

I upgraded to dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini.bin this morning and had no problems. One suggestion posted earlier, I used IE instead of Firefox.

I was also able to install the dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini.bin build despite its file size being over the 3392 kB limit.

However I did have problems with the conflicting info between the route database page and the wiki. Initially I followed the wiki but used the newer r21061 build .chk file from the router database page for the initial replacement of the stock netgear firmware. This ended up bricking my router (due to file size, i assume). I then was able to unbrick surprisingly easily by following these instructions http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=483253#483253, skipping the telnet part (steps 4-6). Once back to stock I followed all 15 steps from the wiki, using the .chk file from step 2 (r15962). Then I updated to the r21061 mini from the database page and it worked!

I don't know when the file size limitations apply and when they don't but hopefully this will help somebody in a similar situation.

PostPosted: Wed Jan 07, 2015 19:01    Post subject: Issues with Wireless Client Mode on newer builds Reply with quote
Just as an FYI to any other readers who might show up here, I tried all of the newer builds mentioned, and 17990 was the only one I could get working with wireless Client mode. With the newer builds, including as old as 18777, as soon as I enabled Client mode and Applied, the router would go off into la-la-land…not even responding to pings. Upon reboot, it would respond to pings early (the TFTPd), but never come back. A 30-30-30 would reset it, however, so it wasn't bricked.

So, if you're to the point of wanting to use an older WNR2000v2 as a client/bridge, you might want to downgrade to 17990 or try out Tomato (which I found overall a bit easier UX-wise to configure in client mode to attach to a XfinityWiFi hotspot).

Oh, and happily the WNR2000 gets MUCH better wireless reception than my WRT54Gv2.2 for this purpose…almost 10db better signal and better noise tolerance!

FWIW...
WNR2000v2 Successful flash to latest beta build 26490 (both mini and vpn-small)

File: dd-wrt.v24-26490_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini.bin
MD5: 57a40734f3ce2cb19c579aa40e57b906

No real testing other than noting Joy on initial flash.

Noted it reports 64k NVRAM; however, it looks like there is really only 32k... (maybe i'm just sleepy and not thinking this thru Wink )
Code:
root@DD-WRT:~# nvram show | grep size
size: 20334 bytes (12434 left)

path I took to get here:
Stock
dd-wrt.v24-15962_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNR2000v2.chk
dd-wrt.v24-18777_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini.bin
dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini.bin 3.37 MB (3,543,040 bytes)
dd-wrt.v24-26490_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini.bin 3.40 MB (3,567,616 bytes)

Obviously flashing the last two it would appear that some of the historical information in the wiki about flash size limit is NOT accurate... (i.e. 3392 KB)

per Peacock, Note 4...
Quote:
4MB flash chip Netgear routers: 3735552 bytes

That was what I used as a reference.

Let me try one more thing...

File: dd-wrt.v24-26490_NEWD-2_K2.6_openvpn_small.bin
MD5: 3594c6623291d048c825477456a7c620

Successful Flash... Yep that last one was the largest 3.46 MB (3,629,056 bytes)

Also 32k NVRAM reporting properly on status page now.

final observation tonight I was on windows 7 64 bit and Internet Explorer 11 would not flash firmware after initial flash of DD-WRT (not once, even after clearing cache)... all flashes failed or simply quit with no adverse impact.

I had to use firefox to flash any firmwares after initial flash from stock.

@ScooterComputer
from IE i was unable to set client mode on wireless tab (apply settings would not work), from firefox i was able to set client mode and apply settings successfully. I did not test this, simply pointing out if anyone else wishes to test further.

PS. I have updated the WIKI with this information. Smile This post has also been linked. So, any feedback from users that have tested more advanced configurations on more recent builds (like 26490) would be appreciated.

Just registered to confirm that I successfully flashed WNR2000v2 with this build.

Had the 21061 build but it had the ssh connection bug. It even took all my previous setting. Genius.

Now I have SSH and OpenVPN for my Android.

Big thanks to DD-wrt Team. Got the WNR2000v2 from a friend who planned to throw it away (bought expensive FritzBox) and now I have more features Twisted Evil .

How did you reset when going from one build to another, if at all ? Did you Restore to factory defaults, or used reset button, or the famous 30/30/30 method ?

reset via drop down on firmware update page each time...

Then once on "dd-wrt.v24-26490_NEWD-2_K2.6_openvpn_small.bin" i also reset by holding reset button till wifi led went out (13-15 seconds). and waited for complete reboot 3-5 minutes (when WIFI light came back on, and TTL ping responses were 64 again)

(did not try a 30-30-30, given the other two methods listed above always took me back to the 'create password' GUI)

Just a flashing power light, is it dead or can I revive it? TFTP? Should I use the same dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNR2000v2.chk which for some reason downloaded as a 'recovered file fragments'- was this the problem?

The flashing power light means that the router doesn't have a system installed, and it's waiting to be flashed.
Probably you flashed a ddwrt .chk file and your router failed afterwards?
follow this topic below for a debricking method.
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=81013&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
i've used a bunch of times, left some feedback also on page 2.

To save you some time, flash a Netgear firmware for it, then flash the ancient factory to ddwrt that is available on the router DB (16XXX).

Anyone flashed a newer version than 26490?

Followed the procedure and finally got Netgear fw back on. Can any body provide a link for a build that will NOT brick it again and give good wifi in client bridge mode. As I stated above, the 'other builds' are not showing for me?
