is this router dead or is there anything else to try?

It might be worth trying NMRPFLASH for netgear routers.
A guide with link to NMRPFLASH file and instructions for using it are found here:
https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=1139019#1139019

You will have to be logged in to see and download the file.

Hope this helps you out.

First, you did not indicate a build version. I'm not sure if VAPs work on k2.6 builds, but start here:
https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Guest_Network#VAP_with_no_WAN

I'm also not sure if the long-standing VAP issue affects k2.6, for that see my build thread release notes.

While I'm here...last weekend I actually just finally DD' the spare WNR2000v2 I had laying around, and found out a lot. For instance, 40723 is the last working build, and BS has no idea why. :-\ I updated the wiki. Wink

thx for your fast answer, sorry i forgot to mention the build i am actually on - its v3.0-r38937

i had a really hard time getting onto it because i was stuck on a build from 2016 and no chance on updating to a newer one via web interface.

had to use tftp and go back to inital dd-wrt from 2012 and then update to the newer one

i will study the link you gave me an look into the release notes of the last working build you mentioned.

I have this working on the same device now, although on an older build v21061

See post on page 25 of this thread re possible vulnerability
