I bricked mine by putting the wrong firmware on it - I put the MIPSR1 firmware on it instead of MIPSR2 and it no longer responds - IP address is 169.x.x.x, I've tried the 30/30/30, tried powering it on with holding the WPS button and those don't work. Tried pinging 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.20.81 - none of those respond when powering on the router.
Anyone have any instructions on how to tftp load the router with the firmware?
Thanks!
-----------------
UPDATE - fixed it with the CFE. CFE doesn't work with Safari or Chrome on MAC (at least not for me). Put it into Windows and IE worked like a charm! Follow instructions from post #1.
Since the 8301 has the same amount of flash and RAM as the 7301/3301, I would expect that the generic mega build is OK. yes? no?
Mega should work but it doesn't leave any flash space left for JFFS as was posted earlier. If you are planning to use a usb thumb drive/hd that shouldn't matter. See top of page 5.
First time installer just wanted to post what worked for me since as previously pointed out, a lot of these routers are flooding the market and there hasn't been a clear answer on what firmwares people are having success with.
Have F7D8301.
Installed dd-wrt.v24-15030_NEWD-2_K2.6_big
didn't come up right away afterwards, ran another 30/30/30 and was fine.
1)do 30/30/30 first
2)install dd-wrt.v24-18946_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini.bin
3)install dd-wrt.v24-18946_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin
4)do 30/30/30 then
everything work great. Both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz work fine. just 2.4Ghz is way better then 5Ghz. try to install Toastman later.
Did you know what different
tomato-K26USB-1.28.0500.5MIPSR2Toastman-RT-N-VLAN-Ext.trx
vs
tomato-K26USB-1.28.0500.5MIPSR2Toastman-RT-N-VLAN-VPN.trx
which one is better to support openVpn?

Finally give a try on shibby tomato firmware "tomato-K26USB-1.28.RT-MIPSR2-101-BIG-VPN.trx" and BRICK my router. need a help to restore the router back.

Yes, I have read a lot, from dd-wrt, myopenrouter, tomatousb, but I cannot decide which firmware is for me.
I have a belkin F7D8301v1, and I want dlna, NAS, file and printer sharing; i want VPN too but optional.
My router are running tomato shippy v101 over dd-wrt mini(by Eko). But disappointed that the router keep hanging after few hours of running. DLNA always display "Scanning in process" and never stop. When I try to brows via dlna, only part of colection displayed. Especially, if I play movie via dlna, the router hang totally after stop playing.
I am so confused now and have to ask for your help. If you own an F7D8301 and be happy with upgrade firmware on above features, please share me your experience, firmware version/links then I can follow.

I have an 8301 that I recently put SVN17990 on. A lot of what you are looking for, I can't comment on, but I have not been able to get USB drives to show up in Windows. I can see and browse them via telnet or FTP, but not Windows. I tried SVN16773 earlier, and I could see a USB folder in Windows, but still couldn't see any content. On my Netgear 3700 with 18777, I could see and use USB OK from Windows.
I created a guest SSID in both versions on the 8301, but one or the other would disappear after 5 minutes or so. I had the feeling that when DynDNS was disabled things were better. I haven't tried 5 GHz.
That's about all I have used other than SSH, although the key seems stable, unlike the reports in 18946. I've read the comments for SVN18946 and it doesn't seem all that encouraging for the 8301 at this time. If you haven't already been there already, starting about page 11 of this thread are comments about various Tomato versions. I'm on the verge of trying Tomato on this router, just to see what it's all about. Depending upon your needs, DD-WRT may or may not be what you are looking for now. A lot of DD-WRT and Tomato builds are experimental, and they come AS-IS. Thankfully my WRT300N is rock solid with 14929, and likewise the WRT54s with other older DD-WRT FW. Still waiting to give the 3700 another shot with DD-WRT. _________________ WNDR3700V1, WRT300NV1, WRT54GV5,8, F7D8301

currently, my router is running DD-wrt extremely steady and fast. The router is up running about 3 days without any problem so far. I am happy on this firmware. The old stock firmware dropped signal after several hours. I do use USB printer, easy to set-up, no complain at all. I did not use others so i don't know. but there are many post talking about sammba under NAS for file sharing. So i guess this should be ok.

Fully agree Luper.
I followed your post but updated to the latest (Build 18946M) without problems. I'm now running a Belkin F7D4301 / F7D8301 v1, with firmware version: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (04/07/12) big - build 18946M NEWD-2 K2.6 Eko
I also did as I was told to do a 30/30/30...
Then flashed the mini...
Then flashed the big...
Then for good measure did another 30/30/30.
The original version I installed, which according to the Supported List is the latest, is WAY out of date (v24 SP2 K2.6 15030), and doesn't support 5GHz. Avoid.
As of September 2012 - use firmware version 18946.
Since upgrading, I have both frequencies working, and I have successfully created a Wireless Repeater Bridge connected to a NETGEAR DGND3700 Wireless Router / Modem. I didn't touch the NETGEAR DNGD3700, but instead only dealt with the Belkin firmware.
During the process, I did have to remove the power a couple of times on the Belkin during the configuration process, but only when the browser interface failed to respond. Not sure if it was my network card or the router. I followed the following steps (actually I used the YouTube video linked at the bottom) without problems - very thorough:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Client_Bridged
Message for Eko - I noticed that the 2.4GHz SSID wasn't broadcasting when setup as a Virtual Interface on the Repeater Bridge interface. The "Enabled / Disabled" radio buttons appear to be backwards. I have "Disabled" mine, in order to get it to broadcast.
Brilliant work overall. And I was originally worried that I was only going to be able to use WEP for the security on my Wireless Repeater Bridge... but I have full WPA2 Personal AES Encrypted link.
yesterday I bought a Belkin F7D4301 V1. I bought to test if it is good for me (hd streaming, work, ps3, xbox...). After some tests, this device appears to be good for only 42€ compared to others model with similar characteristics.
Now, I want to change the firmware to improve the capabilities, but I am crazy searching information about what is the best option.
What firmware do you recommend me?

My experience with that procedure on an F7D4301 v1 wasn't so fortunate:
Flashed dd-wrt.v24-18946_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini.bin successfully,
then upgraded to dd-wrt.v24-18946_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin (with option to reset to defaults) apparently successfully --
but after hard reset it now seems to be dead -- no lights when I plug it in, no LAN connection on cable, booting to CFE miniweb server does not appear to work.
