hi, i have a wrt160nv3 on BS Test Build 15693 in AP mode and i'm living in a college town apartment complex so there is A LOT of wifi signal going around. i have tried to use one of the channels discussed in the wireless-n dd-wrt wiki page (11 upper). are there any good setting recommendations to do in this situation?

my current settings i applied:
AP
ack timing = 0
network = n-only
channel = 11 upper - 40 MHz
encryption = WPA2 Personal AES
beacon = 75
cts protection = off
ttraff daemon = disabled
spi firewall = off
tcp timeout = 120
udp timeout = 90
tx power = 85

everything else is basically default. i'll attach pictures of my inSSider detecting the other routers around the area.
thanks in advance!

you are in a really crowded area no doubt.

is 5ghz an option for you?

youre set to 40mhz spread, so youre already spanning way more frequency and getting way more interference. set it down to 20 and see if that helps. also, channel 4 may look like its your best bet when looking at your graph.

if all of your clients can support a 10mhz spread (half) and your router does too, you can set it to that on channel 3 or 4 and probably be ok.

going down to 20mhz will decrease throughput, and going to 10mhz will decrease even further, but at this point your biggest problem is probably interference and a stable connection with slower throughput would be better than an unstable/high ping/high loss connection with occasional fast throughput

5ghz isn't an option Sad
how can you check if our networking cards can support 10Mhz? just googling the card?
and how many mbps does 10Mhz support? right now i have comcast giving me anywhere between 10-50mbps

Going with 20mhz channel will likely give you a more stable connection than 40mhz (which is more prone to interference, especially with that many in your area).

However best solution is to buy a new router with 5Ghz (and probably USB/adapters with 5Ghz support).

Don't forget that other devices will knock out/interfere with your wireless too. I know back when I used to live in apartments our microwave was a wifi killer, knocking out internet completely while it was on.

yes you could google your card to see if it supports 10mhz spectrum. you can also just set it and see if your clients can see the AP

if your clients are all N capable, your THEORETICAL throughput at 10mhz would be 65mbps i believe, 27mbps for g. real world speed is probably slower. and that is for 1 client at a time. adding more clients splits the total while they are all pulling data.

but you are likely to see better performance that way rather than dealing with the wifi interference issues.
