So I have a few basic needs out of this config:
1. USB support for a 2TB NTFS drive (already have it mounted and working currently)
2. Authenticate to several windows 7 devices (unable to under base samba config)
3. Authenticate to a PS3 (media server component)
All the guides i've read indicate that i'll need to install optware to get off the ground. The samba3 part sounds relatively simple once optware is installed and working, but I keep seeing conflicting ideas on how to link the two procedures together.
I figure aim for this:
1. Create an ext3 partition to serve as /opt (1G)
2. Create an ext2 partition to serve as swap (512M)
3. Use remaining space for NTFS partition
Problem 1, the issue I noticed is the default NAS setup doesn't handle multiple volumes well. I assume this goes away with the optware installed, but the issue seems to be a lack of mount points (/mnt,/jffs, /mmc). Can't create new mountpoints as root is ro.
Problem 2, sounds like 2.6 doesn't work with media sharing programs... has that changed? I do enjoy streaming media to the PS3.
Problem 3, the article on optware talks about a lot of different services. I'm making the assumption I only need samba3 and twonky for my needs.
I realize some of this is rather remedial, but i'd enjoy it if someone could conceptually map this one out. I'll be doing a test run on this process with a 64G SSD later this week, so any pointers are appreciated.
In case anyone is curious, this whole project was just so I could get WOL & increase my DHCP lease. The stock netgear firmware worked perfect for the above tasks. |
