It's been a year and a half since I last checked to see if it was possible to flash the TL-WR1043v5 with an alternative router OS. Any progress on this router with DD-WRT?

Try it. Is the router still rejecting dd-wrt firmware "this operation is not allowed for remote management"?

First off, your post is a bald-faced lie. You may not have inquired publicly, or if you did, it got nixed, perhaps,
but you did PM me about it. I kinda wished I had saved all the PMs now that I think about it.

I'd be glad to try the commands from that thread. But how do I get into a shell on the factory firmware?
It doesn't seem to have an SSH server running.

Sorry, I don't think we need yet another thread on this device. I personally have not had time to get a working
serial console and see what's blocking it yet or figure out a workaround. You have said yourself that you have
tftp flashed and bricked it, but no serial logs, no debug information provided, NOTHING to send to BrainSlayer
to fix the situation. You've asked how to get to a shell; if there is no telnet or ssh server running, then you
*have* use serial, which requires a jumper or manually shorting across two pads on the circuit board. I'm not
sure if BrainSlayer has one of these in hand; and donating one does not require an email reply. Contact them
when you send it so they know it's coming and they should reply at some point. How many years has the
community been screwing around waiting and not taking action or doing any research outside of the first thread?
Not to mention the speculations in this thread.

Here's the "paper trail" for OpenWRT support, which I believe BS has already seen, but why not add it here:

Also, in searching for the commits to OpenWRT's git, I found this commit which has some interesting info:

Installing via Recovery
-----------------------
Activate Web-Recovery by beginning the upgrade Process with a
Firmware-Image from TP-Link. After starting the Firmware Upgrade,
wait ~3 seconds (When update status is switching to 0%), then
disconnect the power supply from the device. Upgrade flag (which
activates Web-Recovery) is written before the OS-image is touched and
removed after write is succesfull, so this procedure should be safe.

Plug the power back in. It will come up in Recovery-Mode on 192.168.0.1.
When active, all LEDs but the WPS LED are off.
Remeber to assign yourself a static IP-address as DHCP is not active in
this mode.

The boot.bin can now be uploaded and flashed using the web-recovery.

Web-Recovery
------------
TP-Link integrated a new Web-Recovery like the one on the Archer C7v4 /
TL-WR1043v5 / Archer C50v4. Stock-firmware sets a flag in the "romfile"
partition before beginning to write and removes it afterwards. If the
router boots with this flag set, bootloader will automatically start
Web-recovery and listens on 192.168.0.1. This way, the vendor-firmware
or an OpenWRT factory image can be written.

By doing the same while performing sysupgrade, we can take advantage of
the Web-recovery in OpenWRT.

It is important to note that Web-Recovery is only based on this flag. It
can't detect e.g. a crashing kernel or other means. Once activated it
won't boot the OS before a recovery action (either via TFTP or HTTP) is
performed. This recovery-mode is indicated by an illuminated WPS-LED on
boot.

I have emailed BrainSlayer yet again on this device; If he decides to respond in any of the threads or whatever, we shall see.
