This also depends on the client you have as well. You could say turn off WMM but in that case Intel cards wont work with it but Broadcom cards will.
So there's no broad perfect setup for anyone. It's a simple matter of reading what the functions do and then test them out. It's just a off/on kinda thing. If On works better then leave it on.

Ok here's a lil tip i use as I have a Intel 6300. For the 5Ghz network:
CTS to OFF
Frameburst to ON
WMM should already be ON
No Acknowledgements to ON
With that last one it seems to boost things from 8-10 to 10-12(~14)MB/s copying to a LAN PC.
For Belu:
On the original firmware I get 22-25MB/s with my Intel 6300 card on 5Ghz Band so it seems your card is the problem. Granted there is some lower performance with DD-WRT but I still get good speeds, more so than you get with Stock firmware and your card apparently (or close). 2.4Ghz is too crowded in my area so only my phone uses that as well as when friends come over.
Well seeing as the Mac is from 2008, I would assume the reason for the performance is that it is dual band, not triple band.
I did some testing of firmwares earler since I read earlier that someone suggested that FW_E4200_1.0.01.010_US_20110221_code was the fastest.
My findings were that FW_E4200_1.0.00.013_US_20101112_code and FW_E4200_1.0.01.010_US_20110221_code were mostly the same. If I was lucky I'd get ~200mbps but more often than not it seemed to randomly drop to about 150mbps. With FW_E4200_1.0.02.013_US_20110524_code I get a consistant 200mbps+, more often hovering around 218-225mbps at close range.
I tried various tweaks and what not but could not get any better speeds. A previous poster suggested FW_E4200_1.0.01.010_US_20110221_code was about 10% faster than FW_E4200_1.0.02.013_US_20110524_code but I just wasn't seeing it.
My test setup was an old dual core laptop connected to the E4200 with Cat5e, and my Vaio with Intel 6300 and latest drivers connected to the E4200. The radio was set to 5ghz N only and the 2.4ghz radio was off.
The CPU and the HDD didn't appear to be a bottleneck in the tests for the old laptop, so I'm wondering if maybe the max of 225mbps or so is simply the limit of the Cat5e cable I have, although I wouldn't expect much more than 225mbps anyway, so it's possible that this is just the max for this router.
I'm really pleased with the performance of this router. During my speed tests I moved my client laptop to my bedroom. At around 8M and through a wall and a floor, I still get about 170mbps and the link rate is 270-300mbps occasionally peaking at 360. Compare that to my Netgear/Virgin media supplied wireless N router that gives me around 65mbps at the same distance.
Might have to pull the trigger on another E4200 to upgrade my wireless bridge setup soon. I assume that if my laptop in my current location, can pull a minimum of 145mbs (average 170-180) from the stock router downstairs, that an E4200 running DD-WRT in client bridge in the same location as my laptop should be able to hit 100mbps?
What are the highest speeds anyone's had out of it? Unfortunately since I'm in Europe, I have to use channel 44+48 on the stock FW.

There is no "ideal" set up, that's always alot of compromises. You have to test what is best for you.
Depending what you want N/G-mode 40Mhz wpa2+aes and so on. You can get som advice from wiki.

I am having a hard time with my USB hard drive on build 17201 connected to my e4200. The hard drive is mounting fine. It is a 2TB fat32. I can sometimes connect to it and sometimes can't. That is what is driving me the most crazy. It only works.... sometimes.
When I try to smb into it from my macbook it says connection error. When I try and FTP into it using finder "connect to server" I get an error and it says the drive disconnected. If I use cyberduck I can connect and see the drive and go through the file structure but the speed of transferring files slows down to about 900b/s (not kb.) I want to be able to connect using smb through finder. What I really don't understand is it worked this morning and nothing has changed. So why would it not work now. Please help
I guess it depends on what you do but i've been running 17201 Big for the past 2 weeks, and I have 8 days uptime now. 2.4Ghz radio works just fine as well as 5Ghz which is what i mainly use. I have a Intel 6300 in my Thinkpad.
I'm not doing extra crazy stuff however so i can't comment on if X works. I'm just using it as a normal router like the basic firmware for my cable ISP. I just like some of the display output options instead of stock.
Weird, are they connecting at 1Gbps speeds? I get 50MB/s with my system but that's a result of the 1.8" 5400RPM drive i have in my laptop. I JUST got a 64GB SSD so i'll be testing that later! OOOOH BABY!!
