Asus RT-N66U (Broadcom BCM5300 chip rev 1, 64kB NVRAM.)
DD-WRT v24-sp2 (03/14/14) kongac - build 23720M

I've been running the above Kong build for several months but the "Wireless Site Survey" doesn't work and it seems to need to be rebooted a fair amount. I use it in repeater mode. I plan to add USB storage.

1) Can anybody recommend a good, full-featured build (that works in repeater mode) and point me to the repository?

2) Can I just upload the firmware and do a 30-30-30 reset?

Thanks in advance!

If you do not specifically need DD-WRT, Asuswrt Merlin would be the best choice.

Thanks Slobodan. Unfortunately, Merlin's builds don't enable isolation of the repeater's WLAN from the host's WLAN. (At least Merlin didn't allow that several months ago when I tried it.) I should have mentioned that I need that.

Any other recommendations?

Install on the asus n66u build brainslayer dd-wrt.v24-23919_NEWD-2_K3.x-big-RT-N66U.trx and noticed that the menu is 192.168.1.1 so very slowly regairuet. Install build kong ac 24200M. When I remove the tick to configure Setup -> VLANs -> Auto-Negotiate after cashing apply menu 192.168.1.1 stops responding, no internet, have to manually restart. Well rebooted, set up, everything works fine, but after a day of work (10-15 wifi comps and 10 lan computers, the site 192.168.1.1 begins to slow down, to see the load interface is not possible, more than a minute tab opens. I do not know whether there is such a problem in the firmware brainslayer, but impossible to carry out interfaces bandwidth. Although when tested kongac on 3 computers, everything was fine for several days.

Ah i saw http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Router_Slowdown

I set Maximum Ports: 10096. Will set back to 4096. If can help, i will inform.

Do you saturate the 4096?

On the status page, you can see how many are in use.

TorGuard.net (anonymous VPN service) sells an RT-N66U with K3.X preinstalled and configured for their service which I have.

I would like to buy a new RT-66U not only for this VPN capability, but also to failover from WAN/Ethernet to my Mobile Broadband USB modem which the Wiki says is supported by DD-WRT.

Does anyone here know if Asuswrt Merlin on the RT-66U is another option for me? Is that easy/easier to flash than DD-WRT?

Yes, but to my shame, the problem was in the browser Firefox, I'm working with a laptop and does not close browser as not turn off the laptop (running in sleep mode). Mozilla restart solved the problem with the slow work of 192.168.1.1. But the fact that the router hangs when changing settings VLANs present a problem.

RMerlin flashes just like the asus firmware. No difference.
Dd-wrt isn't hard, it just takes a couple more steps.
See my sticky at the top of this forum.

I assume this was directed at my inquiry Malachi thanks. As I look at your sticky I have to ask: why the "two-step" i.e. Brainslayer flash first, then the desipro.de build? Perhaps you should comment in your sticky post; it's not intuitively obvious why a two-step procedure might be needed. And why is the desipro.de build not mentioned in the wiki for this router?

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Asus_RT-N66U

I will buy the RT-N66U and try all of ASUSWRT (out of box), RMerlin, and DD-WRT though it seems only DD-WRT has the "connect to anonymous private VPN service" capability.

And from what I've seen of the ASUSWRT screenshots it appears that DD-WRT has a less-gimicky UI more suited to tinkerers like myself.

Brainslayer can't concentrate on a few builds like kong can, as he has more to do. Or so I'm told.
If the Brainslayer build works fine with you , stay at that.

The Initial Build is needed because it's a format accepted by the stock firmware.
