I just flashed 21530 followed by 24461

What doesnt bode well is that it reports 256kb of nvram O_o

is this something I need to be worried about?

21530 reported 64kb of nvram.

I did do a nvram reset.

I believe I heard that the 256k RAM report is an error and it;s really just 64K. don;t know why it hasn;t been fixed all this while

With kong 2.6 22000++ build client/wireless bridge wireless performance is very poor - 5.5 mb/s. I had to go back to my d-link dir 615 for 72 mb/s.

After going through this summary topic, here is what I did to install DD-WRT on a stock RT-N16:

1. Flashed dd-wrt.v24-14929_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N16.trx as suggested in the DD-WRT Wiki via Asus GUI.
2. Restarted while holding down WPS button for 30 secs.
3. Flashed dd-wrt.v24-21530_NEWD-2_K3.x_big.bin (5/10/13 build)
4. Restarted while holding down WPS button for 30 secs.
5. Flashed 24461_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-RT-N16.trx (6/25/14 build)
6. Restarted while holding down WPS button for 30 secs.
7. Done!

So far so good. Everything seems to work, including Open VPN client, which is what I was after.

First off sorry to bump an older thread, but I am in the process of updating from my D-link DIR-615 E1 as it is going out. Got myself a RT-N16 coming in soon, so I want to make sure I do things right.

So just to reiterate, I follow these steps, correct? I am looking at the newest update (July 9th 2015) in the Broadcom_K3X directory, should I use the newest update? Or is there a safe update that I can use from 2015? Or should I just stick with the 6/25/14 build?

Just to add, I am also checking the thread talking about the new build (07/09/15) to see if anyone has updated to this build, so I will edit this again if I get an answer to my own question.

yes, these are the steps. you can substitute the 6-14 version with the latest. the only steps you must do is first flash the 2.6 version of dd-wrt(14989) or the latest 2.6 version if you want, the the interim 3.x version of 21530. after you do that, you can go to the latest 3.x version.

the distinction here is that on this router, in order to upgrade the router to the 3.x version, it must first have a 2.6 version of dd-wrt on it, then the 3.x 21530 to format the memory correctly, then you can install the latest.

other questions you might have-no you don;t want to stay on 3.x 21530 as it;s broken and features don;t really work on it. we just used it to get 3.x on the router. no, you can;t flash the latest 3.x version on the router directly without first installing 21530. just a quirk in this router.

goodluck!

Oh wow. Last I checked 3.x was not working on RT-N16, which seems like a while ago. I'm still running kong 2.6 22000++.

Is everything working on 3.x, or are there any downsides to it compared to 2.6? Which is the latest build recommended?

it;s been noted that since 3.x builds use a compatible network card driver rather than the native one on the 2.6 builds, Internet Wan speed is noticeably slower on 3.x and this router. I don;t know the exact numbers but please do a speedtest before and after upgrading. Plus you lose the ability to run OTRW if that's important to you.

biggest features of the 3.x build on this router was access to greater than 32k of NVRAM(64K) and ability to mount hard drives greater than 2TB. I don;t know if anyone has reported success or is utilizing the benefits on either.

Alright so just to be sure I am doing my research correctly, if I want to install OTRW/OTRW2 I should be on a 2.6 build. The 3.x kernel builds have some ability to install OTRW2 but most of the services are not working, as it is still being worked on.

The only way to get Transmission is to stay on a 2.6 build, there is a compatibility issue when it comes to the 3.x ones, is all this correct?

as far as I know, the only way to install OTRW/2 is to be on the 2.6 Build. There are other people out there trying to figure out how to install packages via OPKG and other methods on 3.x. I don;t know what the status is.

there is a bit torrent daemon that might already be built into newer builds. it is on 3.x 27506 Giga I just loaded on my Asus RT-AC66R.

Interesting, alright thanks I will take a look at both options and see which one would be better. I noticed you said that the Internet Wan speed is slower on the 3.x ones, so I will have to run a speedtest on both builds to see which would be better for me.

Sorry for the Newbish post, but I just purchased an RT-N16. I have read through the forums, but I am not able to get the download links to work. Can someone point me to where I need to go? I would like to put a 2.6 by KONG, but all the links I have found are not working. I have been able to download what is found through the DD-WRT database, but it doesn't appear these have been kept up with as others in the forums.

Thanks for your help.

I have another question for your madman999, what setting do you have your TX power set to? Currently mine is at 17, but I am wondering if that is alright. I don't know if this would affect my TX error rate but I have been having problems.

Setup: Kong 2200M, optw2 with only the transmission service active. Samba share through dd-wrt interface (which I cannot see the share, I can only locate it by the address, been trying to figure that out). Also Wireless AP in mixed N/G mode (tried just G and just N too same tx errors) secured with WPA2 Personal AES. Channel 11 (best channel), little interference (Noise -88 ).

I just restarted and within 25 minutes I have 16 TX errors, (2873 OK, 16 Errors) I know this is under 1 percent, but it keeps climbing, highest was ~15 percent error rate.
