After a softbrick from a bad build a couple weeks ago, I've finally gotten DD-WRT back to a good state on the rt-n16. Only in recovery mode could I ping the router, everything else was smashed. In summary from a bad load here's what I did:

-Download the ASUS firmware restoration and install it
-Download ASUS's rt-n16 firmware (FW_RT_N16_30043763754) from their site
-Flash from the restoration software while in system recovery (power light with blink off and on while in this state) and within <10 minutes it will recover to stock firmware.
-Download dd-wrt.v24-27600_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N16.trx and flash from ASUS web GUI
-Allow router to reboot and then login with dd-wrt
-Download and flash dd-wrt.v24-21530_NEWD-2_K3.x_big from dd-wrt GUI. This one takes awhile to flash and each time I still needed to hold the reset button on back to get the device to function from initial flash
-After the device is functional, flash to latest build: dd-wrt.v24-28598_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega_RT-N16 and allow it to reboot

And it's back!

Spent a good amount of time troubleshooting this device from the bad firmware load and I'm very impressed to say these are near impossible to brick. Watching the traffic from wireshark, understanding the restoration process and believing only a serial cable going to save it was hours of fun Wink Hopefully this will save someone a couple hours...

I recently upgraded my RT-N16 from 14929 mega (08/12/10) to DD-WRT v3.0-r27858 mega (09/28/15)Linux 2.6.24.111 #26958 Mon Sep 28 01:24:00 CEST 2015 mips

Seems stable No issues.
Uptime18 days, 12:52.

Its only used as an access point so I'm not asking much of it.

But I did briefly use it as my main router for a month before I changed it out for the R6300.

I'm confused as to why builds don't progress beyond the 3.n series. Is it just the Broadcom routers?

The k4.x builds are highly experimental, most were having problems and have rolled back to k3.x builds. It will probably trickle down to some of the older routers once they have the bugs worked out.

On a different note, I took my RT-N16 to a k3.x build.

Started with 27858 k2.6
Flashed 21530 k3.x as first k3.x build as recommended for the RT-N16
Then directly to 29048 k3.x

So far no issues.

Hello.
I flashed my Asus RT-N16 with DD-WRT v24-sp2 (08/07/10) mini
(SVN revision 14896).
Everything I need is working good.

But sometimes, Wifi isn't working as good as I want : devices can't connect to Wireless network.
In order to make Wifi OK, I just click 'Apply' on 'Basic parameters' page of Wireless settings, without changing nothing. Immediately, all devices can connect to wireless network.

What happened making my Wifi KO ?
Is there any logfile that I can check ?
Do you have seen such problem with DD-WRT ?

Thanks.

I'm currently running 30534 K3 on mine. Reading around here, it's the new RT-N16 "recommended" build.

One possible bug: My LAN Mac address has increased by one after the upgrade. Posted in another thread.

I'm tempted to try Tomato-shibby, but beside a few small things, DD-WRT seems solid once you find the right build.

I wonder if the router-hacking community is fading, I took a look at the bugtracker and most issues are old and still marked as "new". Anyway, subject for another thread!

Edit: corrected the build number

Any chance you can write up your process. I always struggle getting the K3x build on to this router.

Cheers

Any new builds working good on the RT-N16?

Need to update to get the patch for Krack. I'm way back on Kong build 22000. Router still performs well, so I'd be great to not have to replace it.

There is a mini build here (ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2017/10-17-2017-r33525/broadcom_K26/). I installed that last night without issue.

There are big and mega builds of K3.X here (ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2017/10-17-2017-r33525/broadcom_K3X/). I tried the mega build last night. It installed just fine, but when I turned on MAC address cloning, I lost connection (wireless and wifi). Not sure why.

I just installed dd-wrt.v24-33525_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin from ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2017/10-17-2017-r33525/broadcom_K26/ and it went well. Hopefully router stays as stable as it was so far - I was just doing just annual reboots for a few years now.

Hi all,
here are my notes from this long evening spent with dd-wrt with aim to update to 33555 firmware which has KCRACK vulnerability fix.

I was not able to make work K3 (mega or big). I was not able to directly upload K2.6 33555 mini via TFTP, I had to upload it using working older mini GUI.

Steps:
- Download GUI TFTP Utility: https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/TFTP_flash#TFTP_Tools
- Download firmware files from ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2017/10-20-2017-r33555/broadcom_K26/
- Set static IP to 192.168.1.111, connect to ASUS RT-N16 using cable to port 2
- Run cmd.exe > "ping 192.168.1.1 -t" (now TTL=64)
- Put it into recovery mode > power it up while holding the 'restore button' (next to WAN connector) for about 10 seconds. TTL in ping will be TTL=100
- Using TFTP Client upload (PUT) file "dd-wrt.v24-25974_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini.bin"
- Wait one minute, turn router off and power it on while holding the WPS button for 10 seconds
- Wait one minute, you should be able to log in at 192.168.1.1 to K2.6 25974 mini DD-WRT GUI
- Using dd-wrt GUI upload 'dd-wrt.v24-33555_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini.bin'
- Wait one minute, you should be able to log in at 192.168.1.1 to dd-wrt
- Using dd-wrt GUI upload 'dd-wrt.v24-33555_NEWD-2_K2.6_mega.bin'

Done Smile

You can check by yourself by search in svn: http://svn.dd-wrt.com/search?q=dnsmasq

I had similar success this week with r33607_NEWD-2_K3.x-big, although K3 builds require a reasonably complicated flashing process to get working which may not be worth it.

i tried both k2.6 33525 big and K3.x 33607 on my asus rt-n16 but ran into stabability isuses i was changing settings back and forth to try and get a kill switch fire wall rule for openvpn among other things when one of the setting changes didnt go through and it kicked me off gui from lan, wlan gui worked but factory reset did nothing had to just delete everthing nvram, ddwrt, linux and goto ddwrt mini then on k3.x it happens again but now wan ether this time ... finally found a fire wall rule that would work to disable wan if no openvpn
Quote:

WAN_IF="$(ip route | awk '/^default/{print $NF}')"
iptables -I FORWARD -i br0 -o $WAN_IF -m state --state NEW -j REJECT --reject-with icmp-host-prohibited
iptables -I FORWARD -i br0 -p udp -o $WAN_IF -m state --state NEW -j REJECT --reject-with icmp-port-unreachable
@Eibgrad but changed to udp version

so i set it up as fast as i could on k2.6 33525 big and im hoping if i dont change any it will just work >> end of story the beta is not to stable but has openvpn gui settings (all the settings user/pass ect) or maybe its just a problem with the router it is old Surprised
