Check the CFE version. If you have 1.0.2.x,downgrade to 1.0.1.9
I assume this would be the boot loaded of the 5th generation RT-AC66U? How can this be checked? And how can it be downgraded to install dd-wrt-29440-Asus_RT-AC66U.trx?
So I downgraded my CFE to 1.0.1.6, and confirmed it via telnet. Deleted the nvram, reboot, but the ASUS web UI still will not accept a dd-wrt kit. Does the fw need to be downgraded also?
Has anyone been successful with a newly purchased RT-AC66U? I am having all of the described issues in this thread, even after using the latest beta from DD-WRT.

Yes, I bought my router 2 weeks ago with CFE 1.0.2.0.
I downgraded the CFE to 1.0.1.6.
After, I flashed the firmware to the last dd-wrt beta.
As "Per Yngve Berg" said, do not erase nvram, but use the Factory Reset in the GUI.
Flashed an old recomended version 2 weks back but ti started playing up when qos was set up....mainly testing speed websites (dsl reports) would cause the router to reboot.
So tried to flash the latest beta.
No luck.
tried the recovery tool....no luck...not even on the stock firmware.
Ran the stock from the gui then flashed the ddwrt beta from the gui...factory reseting before flashing and after.

Works fine.
cfe is 1.0.0.8 hw version A2
This is the same version I have. I am having issues with virtual wireless access points. 1) they don't have MAC address filtering options for the virtual interfaces and 2) even though I know I am entering the right password, the password is rejected as incorrect.

I've ran the Asus RT-AC66U router for years. Once I bought my first one and flashed the firmware to DD-WRT I bought a second one for a backup.
I recently bought one for my dad and was unable to update it following all of the instructions that I had at the time. He is sadly running the stock Asus firmware as I type this.
Well my old router died so I flashed my backup without issue using the latest r31924[1] firmware. After I confirmed that it was working I bought a new backup Asus RT-AC66U router off of Amazon and it arrived a few days ago with the 3.0.0 Asus firmware installed.
I decided to keep the thing as far away from the Internet as possible by having nothing plugged into the WAN port just in case it decided to "phone home" to Asus. As it was not online it could not phone home and it still came up with the "Asus home page"[2] which is a hardcoded URL in the router. Again, I was not connected to the Internet. I believe that keeping this router off of the Internet may be key to updating it.
I followed all of the steps to install the firmware as detailed on the wiki[3] and I now have working backup Asus RT-AC66U router and the Asus router url[2] no longer works.
tl;dr. I was able to install the DD-WRT firmware directly to my Asus RT-AC66U without issue by keeping it disconnected from the Internet during the entire process.
