Based on the advice and different reviews, i have finally bought the Netgeear R6400. Not supporting AC killed the hopes on the Asus RT N66U

I will receive it on monday, so i have a couple of days to learn here from the experts Very Happy

First question, almost mandatory... Should i flash automatically to DD WRT, or should i give a chance to the default firmware and change to DD WRT after some time?

I have experienced a lot of issues with netgear firmware in my existing router (WNR1000 v3), having to downgrade it ocasionally. Does the same thing happen in this router?

Thanks

1- If you need a feature from ddwrt then flash.
2- No problems.

Thanks

Where can i find a list of the features included in dd wrt but not in the original firmware?

Not sure if this is the right place to answer but... how does dd wrt work in this router compared to merlin and tomato?

Thanks

This pretty much sums up available features, nevertheless a feature should satisfy a need of yours and not the other way around.

About 2nd question I don't know, you could search on R6400 thread or search on the forum.

RMerlin is for asus routers, so it doesn't work on this. As to tomato, maybe ask on the tomato forum.

well if i have to be honest since i got my R7000 which is
very similar to R6400 i moved to DD-WRT directly, well i did some checks and play with its stock firmware but as im avid DD-WRT fan i didn't like it and it was not what i was looking for... and well you can get full WAN speed only with stock firmware but the unit is powerful enough to sustain a good WAN speed even with DD-WRT, for me it was not an issue...
I decided to use Kong realises that you can find here:
http://ddwrt-kong.clonevince.fr/
http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/
currently i use 30700-2....
The right way to do upgrade is via web interface first reset to default and then use the .CHK file to flash...
There are reports that you can stay on the CHK file and its fully operational, however i re-flashed with BIN file after the first flash with .CHK...

Compare to Tomato DD-WRT has better WI-FI range and more
resent linux kernel 4.4 witch has better net stack and more features... in general...
However Tomato is also preferred among Netgear users but somehow i didn't liked it
Merlin is for Asus units only and its not that stable as far as i know
here are some useful tech tricks for R7000 and i believe they even do apply for R6400 but check and ask first if you are not sure Wink https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=264152

About chk. It's the way it's, there are no reports, it's stated in Kong's repo. Reflashing after chk is just a placebo.
