hmm... my server and the backup which are in the same LAN get up to 120 MBYTE... so around 1000Mbps... even copying something on my laptop gets to 28MBYTE, around 220mbps..
I would tend do say that the wiring should be fine. I can't though check the cables who are hidden/in the walls.
I might though use another router that is coming allong with original software just to be sure

Hi all,

I just bricked my router after following the wiki procedures for my router:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_WNDR4500

I followed the steps in order and ensured I downloaded the files for the v2 versions of the router. The initial DD-WRT install steps all completed successfully. After completing the DD-WRT Upgrade procedure I was no longer able to connect to the router. I have a continuous slow flashing power light and can ping it at 192.168.1.1. I was working through the recover procedures:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Recover_from_a_Bad_Flash

Under the "windows" section "Recovering with TFTP" it says the firmware MUST be less than 3MB but I am unable to find a firmware file that small. Can anyone please assist?

Thanks in advance, Rich

It doesn't need to be under 3MB but it does need to be smaller than the full dd-wrt install (around 22MB). What I've done the last few times recovering from a bad flash is that I use TFTP with the most recent stock firmware from Netgear (it will be a *.chk file around 12MB in size).

Once you have that downloaded load it in to TFTP, HARD reset the router and run TFTP. Make sure you have nothing else connected to the router besides the computer you are using to TFTP (and make sure you change your computer to a static IP in range of the default router IP). Give it a few minutes as TFTP will probably have to execute 4 or 5 tries (if it gets up to 10 or so tries then HARD reset again and double check the rest of your settings).

Once the new stock firmware is flashed then just use the procedures from initial install from the wiki after which you can update to the last stable build you were using.

Anyway that's worked for me the last 3 times I've bricked my v2

I just flashed my WNDR4500v2 to 26138. What do I have to gain or lose from going to Kong 25015?

Will I lose some features over a slightly older build that's more stable?

Also, which build is better to install opt-ware/OTRW2/ent-ware?

Thanks!

I have not done a reset since 26138, as I have lots of wireless issues if I do (last I checked at least). Air-Time Fairness was enabled by default after 26138, and later disabled again in 29048. But in my testing, disabling ATF after a reset didn't fix my wireless issues, hence why I still haven't tried a reset since...

I'm gonna try just doing a GUI reset. I was on 26138 for a while and then flashed with Kong 25015 which is what I'm on now. But because of the reset I lost all my settings and had to enter them again. Thanks for the advice, jwh7.

I have finally settled on DD-WRT v3.0-r30949 giga (12/15/16) with Yamon 3.2 and entware.

I had intermittent network disconnect on Wifi but after doing 30/30/30, and disabling WAN bruteforce attack, I do not have any issue for the past week.

Thought I would share my experience with DD-WRT on WNDR4500v2.

Thanks.

I've read a few of the posts here but am really new to this. I have just put the latest beta on my WNDR4500v1 am I correct in thinking that I should downgrade this to Kong 25015?

I read that the WNDR4500 is also WIP. Are there any documented issues anywhere?

Is this router a good candidate for DD-WRT? More importantly am I at risk of security issues using it with DD-WRT?

Is work still being done by devs to support this?

Huh, I never noticed the v1 says 'WIP'; v2 says 'Yes.' Don't put much (any) faith in the Router Database though. Newer builds will pull in security fixes of course, but some ranges of builds have had various feature issues; OpenVPN, Repeater mode, Guest mode, Samba issues, wireless issues, etc. So it depends on what you're after.

Search the "New Build" threads to gauge what issues may exist or have gotten fixed, and be wary of kernel 4.4 (ARM) stuff, as it -may- not relate to k3.10 in the MIPS devices (like the 4500). For more specifics, search for:
    W*4500* AND "new build"
I'd suggest seeing how the latest build does for a while; did you do a 'erase nvram' (GUI cmd or telnet/ssh)? If not, and you have issues, try that. If you have more issues, try 26138 and 'erase nvram' again.

Hi,

I am new to the forum and I am considering flashing my stock WNDR4500v1 using the initial flash "26138 mega for WNDR4500" based on https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_WNDR4500

My goal is to get vpn capability (my provider is PureVpn) and to use dual pipe approach or be able to easily switch vpn on and off as needed.

A couple of questions:
1) Is this initial flash plus upgrade stable and not requiring fixes for a casual user?

2) I am confused but once the initial flash applied, is Recommended build for this router Kong 25015-SP1 all I needed to upgrade or shall apply the lastest Upgrade dd-wrt.v24-31277_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-WNDR4500.bin (dated 2/7/17, 11:50:00 AM, in ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2017/02-07-2017-r31277/netgear-wndr4500/)?

Thank you for clarifying.

If you start with 26138 (.chk file), then do a reset, set it up, and if it works (for your VPN, etc) see how it does for a week or two before trying other builds. Subsequent flashes can use the .bin file. Your referenced Kong build or a 2017 build (research and read the "new build" threads first!) are viable options, but make sure you reset b/t different builds (and don't restore a backup except for the same-build from which it was made).

Hi, im not sure who here to ask. I wish to find someone who can compile a stable custom firmware for my WNDR4500v1 with some minor adjustments to the config settings: SSID, WPA passphrase, and admin password -- so that a factory reset returns to these custom settings.

I am willing to make a donation for the efforts (hope this is acceptable).

please let me know any recommendations.

ps. I was willing to attempt to compile this myself and installed the toolchains etc but all the instructions I could find (myopenrouter) had no source download available.

I ran r28211 on my WNDR4500v1's. I used Openvpn client 24/7 and used Policy based routing to have some pc's on vpn and others not on vpn. I also took advantage of samba shares using all the usb ports on both routers. the second WNDR4500 was a repeater bridge and these were rock solid for the last 2 years or so. I tried many versions and from my experience 28211 is the best version for that router. Oh btw the only thing I didn't like about the ddwrt firmware on the WNDR4500 is the painfully slow boot time!

Hey fellow router hackers. Not sure if I have a bug or if I am just not doing something right.

So I am on WNDR 4500v1 31571 giga Tx power at 251 and I am trying to get out of the congestion around my house. Of course, the 2.4G is just chopped full of clients around me so I am trying to move everything to 5G. There are clients there too...of course, not as many but I want to get into an area that has....well, none. Plus my SmartThings hub likes me to get away from 2.4G.

I ran into a problem. If I manually select any channel higher than 44, most of my devices don't see it. Phones see it fine but not the Amazon Dot or the Roku TV. I can go up to 157 and it seems to be happy sort of. I have since reset the 5G to Auto.

Am I missing something here?

Any help.....links.....point them out to me.
Also....one more thing....we are a heavy streaming household aka cord cutting fools, so we have everything going to LAN if we can, are there any settings that I can invoke to give me an absolute screaming router?

I have set the Tx power to 250 because in my researching on here, that was the highest I have gone to. Anyone pushing higher and will it yield better results

Thanks!!!

First off a +1 and thanx to Cmdrwilkens' post above that mentions which firmware to use to recover from a soft brick.
In all the dozens of posts and threads that I read it was not mentioned that clearly.

WNDR4500v2 (from early 2015) Router flashing experience.
This being only my second or third attempt to flash a router and the first attempt at a Netgear, allow me to suggest to other novices:
Read the Peacock Thread, then, re-read the Peacock thread. Then go through this thread. . .

I followed the Wiki -HERE-
For a clean slate I started off with a 30-30-30.
Then flashed the '21638 mega' mentioned in the Wiki.
"dd-wrt.v24-26138_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-WNDR4500V2.chk"
Had a 'Warning' that the update was older than the existing.
Current Firmware Version V1.0.0.60_1.0.38
Uploaded Version V1.0.0.58_0.92.0

Went fine. Auto Re-booted, came up.
I then did another 30-30-30. (I think this is where I might have messed up...)
Came back up fine.
I changed just a couple of settings, SSID and such.
I let it sit for over (12) hours before proceeding. It was fine overnight.

I then went for the Beta of 03-17 to flash.
"dd-wrt.v24-31690_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-WNDR4500V2.bin"
Oops - Fail.
On reboot all I had was the Flashing Orange Power Light.
Did have a Ping TTL of 100 though. At least it was only a soft brick.
Tried a 30-30-30. Tried giving it a Firm Stare. -nope.
Went to Note #6 of the Peacock thread for recovery advice.
The I made my next noob error and tried flashing the 26138 FW. Which of course is ~22MB.
Used the TFTP program under windows, kept thinking maybe it was a timing error on my part.
Put a switch in between the laptop and the router.
Still no go.

Then I read through Cmdrwilkens' post above and caught the obvious.
Grabbed "WNDR4500v2-V1.0.0.56_1.0.36.chk" from NetGear, tftp'd it and it went smooth and fine.
Flashed '21638' again, and then went with the 02-01-2017 Beta.
"dd-wrt.v24-31221_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-WNDR4500V2.bin"
It's been up for over 18-hours now and I plan on swapping it with the old router tomorrow.

I was able to setup my 4TB usb3 Seagate Backup + to my Netgear WNDR4500 v1 (N900) Router with DD-WRT (Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r28211 giga (11/16/15)).

It can accessed it from my PC and mounted it as a network drive (Windows 10). I use to host my media files (music and video) and can access them with PLEX using my PC as a server. Ideally I'd rather be directly from the router but I understand that a routert can't be used as a PLEX server. A full fledge 2- or 4- bay QNAP NAS would be better but I am on a budget. I will also consider an intel Next Computer Unit instead of a NAS. For now I am trying to make the most of "custom NAS" solution with my usb drive connected to my router.

Question: Is an external usb drive always spinning when connected to my router to make it a NAS?
Can it be configured to standby/sleep when not in use?

Also, my Pioneer receiver can't see the network connected drive. Is there something that need to be configured to make it visble so I can use it as a music server?

Thank you.
