I think I had it right before but I will try again. I should only need to connect pin 2(Tx)and pin 6(GND)to receive chars from the router but nothing came back from it. The Rx LED on the converter flashed for short time but nothing displayed on the Hyperterm. What terminal software did you use in Windows 7?

I tend to use Putty.

Otherwise minicom on Ubuntu.

UPDATE: SUCCCESSSSSSSSSSSS Smile

Thanks everyone especially "merrow75" for getting me to try to unbrick it again and this time IT WORKED Smile

I was able to get meaningful response from the router using "Putty". The stupid "Hyperterm" was the cause of all my pain and suffering before.

Update:

I have not been able to flash the DD-WRT(xxx.chk) firmware on this router without bricking it again. The CFE console reported an error at the NVRAM erase stage and went through an endless rebooting loop with a solid amber light (just like before).

However, I could flash it with Tomato firmware.

What version of dd-wrt were you flashing?

Would it be possible to provide the log showing the error message?

I tried the recommended built in the WikiDev page and a few other versions and they all bricked the two routers I have. All Tomato firmwares worked the first time so there must be something wrong with DD-WRT firmwares Sad

dd-wrt.v24-26138_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-R6300.chk
dd-wrt.v24-30082_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-R6300.chk

I just tried flashing the dd-wrt.v24-K26_R6300_19-10-2012.chk and it worked OK.

But it would not let me upgrade to the K3.x firmware I wanted.

The R6300v1 thread indicates that users are successfully running the latest version (available from the dd-wrt ftp site):

DD-WRT v3.0-r30949 giga (12/15/16)

Hopefully someone who is running the R6300v1 can provide some tailored information regarding the builds.

So far ALL of the Kong V3 (K3.X) both *.chk an *.bin (updated from dd-wrt.v24-K26) versions including (initial flash versions) resulted in a BRICKED R6300V1 router (CFE = 1.0.2) using the Web GUI.

Do I need to use TFTP to flash the *.chk file or not?

Certainly try the tftp method to install the chk version.

Prior to doing so, in cfe, issue "nvram erase" and reboot.

If you encounter further problems, please provide the serial output showing the boot up.

Thank you.

I have tried ALL of the above (including tftp, tftp2, CFE NVRAM Erase, etc) without success. The router went into an endless reboot with a solid amber light Sad

Sorry to hear that it's not working.

Are you able to provide the serial output of the boot up? It should provide clues as to why it's failing.

Kong doesn't make a build for the r6300v1 anymore. Hasn't in a long time.

Did you try this build?

ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2017/02-01-2017-r31221/broadcom_K3X/dd-wrt.v24-31221_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega.bin

Or try this one

ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2017/02-01-2017-r31221/broadcom_K3X/dd-wrt.v24-31221_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-nv64k.bin This one has a hard limit for Nvram at 64kb.

Also it seems some netgear routers will only flash when using the firefox browser. Chrome, IE, Edge do not work.

I did see people reported success with the tailored build. I would try using firefox to upgrade it with a working older dd-wrt on it.

You should only use builds that are in a folder for your unit, like this for example.
ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2017/02-01-2017-r31221/netgear-r6300/

Or earlier dates.
