I have a particular scenario where I'm using an ancient Buffalo WRT-HP-G54 device as a wireless bridge and it's running some 14000 or 15000 build. I can't remember exactly which but it's one of the recommended builds for the older routers.

With KRACK now an issue, and I'd rather avoid trying to patch back and build a specific fix into the old version, I'm going to look into upgrading that router to the latest brainslayer build when the KRACK fix is released.

What's the general experience with ancient hardware and modern builds? Is it generally pretty-much okay, or is it pretty dependent? I note the peacock thread still recommends 14929 mostly Smile

Read thru the New Build threads; there are many old routers running latest firmware (33492...or 33215) like various WRT54* models. Just be sure to research it to avoid router-specific issues. E.g. the latest build is to big to fit k3x builds on most 8MB routers. The part that can be build dependent is particular features.

Did you mean WHR-HP-G54? It should be able to use any of the generic /broadcom/ builds, however the KRACK fix for hostapd just went in today, so you'd need the next build, after making sure there aren't any issues in it's New Build thread. My understanding is that it only affects Repeater (and Client I presume) modes.

Yeah WHR-HP-G54. Sorry for that typo. And yup, it's running in repeater mode.

I've been doing some research and it's tricky because there don't seem to be alot of people with really old 802.11g hardware still using it (and really alot of people seem to be content with old versions - as I was until this wonderful problem arose).

It does look like at least one person has fairly new versions working okay on wrt54g so we'll see how the latest flash goes when the next build is out Smile

I just managed to upgrade my WRT54Gv8 from build 13637 to build 33535 (micro). I'm using it as a wireless access point.

I'm confused by this, because I have wireless turned off on my telco-supplied 2wire; my access point handles all the Wifi duties. So I upgraded my WRT54Gv8's firmware just to be on the safe side.

There was a JS error in Firewall.asp which prevented me from being able to disable the SPI firewall. See http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=276771#1099695 for my proposed workaround, and also some details on how I upgraded and which firmware I used.

Hi, I am well out of my depth here, but I too have a WHR-HP-G54 router still in use, currently running 2010 v24 SP-2.

I just read the warnings above about using only the 2.4 Kernel of 33535. I went looking for the download with no real success, based probably on not knowing exactly what I was looking for. I need to ensure I am getting the v2.4 Kernel version as I cannot afford to buy a new router.

Would someone please be kind enough to give me a link to the download for the KRAK fixed version for this oldy but goody router.

Thank you.

Check the new build thread for 33555 the first post has a link. Navigate to the Broadcom directory...those are the V2.4 builds.

Thanks for the quick reply, but I can't find anything for the WHR-HP-G54

There is a WHRG54 is that a typo?

And, does the missing "HP" matter?

Smile As I mentioned, well out of my depth.

flash the generic build on that unit.

It doesn't need to be unit specific.

OK, thanks. I used the mini version.

Seems to be all OK otherwise I would not be able to get back here. Smile.

I appreciate the help.

Fyi to all, it appears Broadcom devices will have the fixes in:
Changeset [33574] by brainslayer: update for older broadcom devices
Changeset [33573] by brainslayer: fix for krackattack
Changeset [33572] by brainslayer: fix for broadcom supplicant to handle krackattack
...so look for the next build, hopefully in the next few days.
