Same problem. Tp-link tl-wr1043nd v1 build v3.0-r35034
Tried different 3G dongles, Huawaei E372 and some old ZTE. ppp0 is UP, dns name resolve via lan/wifi work, but no ping/internet connection. log from serial:
Code:

.Bad argument `100.112.22.143'
Error occurred at line 5
Try `iptables-restore -h' or 'iptables-restore --help' for more information.
100.112.22.143 - modem ip address.
If i log in (via serial) and add rule
Code:
iptables -A POSTROUTING -t nat -j MASQUERADE -o ppp0
ping/internet via lan/wifi begin to work.
Some simple script, that add iptables rule on ppp0 up is a solution, but I have no script writing skills, and in 2018 things like that should work without any scripts.

Latest gargoyle works with my 3g dongle, but i was unable to setup openvpn client (tun interface up, but has no ip, nothing helpfull in client/server logs..) I'm now again on dd-wrt build 33555, 3g works, openvpn client works (but i'm still trying to setup proper routing between two networks)
UPD. Latest build with 3g working is r33772. Previous builds - 3G working, next built - "Error occurred at line 5 "
