I’ve got my dd-wrt router (Linksys 1900acs) connected to my Vodafone router (ISP supplied router/modem), its running well, I have vpn running and I’m learning as I go along, quick question should I alter the “Operating Mode” from “Gateway” to “Router”, what would be the advantages/disadvantages of the change?

If I understand correctly you have daisy chained your routers e.g. Connect Lan from primary router to Wan from secondary router. If so, my advice is to leave the secondary router in gateway mode, that way you have NAT and firewall.

An other way to setup is using the secondary router as WAP: https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Access_Point
That way you have one network which is easier if you rely on broadcasting like windows netbios or DLNA, chromecasting etc.

Even with a WAP you can have the VPN on the secondary router and set that as gateway for the clients you want.
