Hello all,

I have been searching the forum for the last couple of hours with the hope that I find an answer to my problem but I can't seem to be able to do so.

So, I have a DIR-868L Rev A router from D-Link. Here is what I did:
1. I reset it to factory settings.
2. Installed the latest stock firmware (1.20) from D-Link's website.
3. Did another factory reset
4. Uploaded the firmware with factory-to-ddwrt.bin (although I am not sure if this has actually worked because once the firmware upgrade was done, I don't see any indication that the installation was successful - other than the page taking me to the log-in screen).
5. Whenever I try to install the dir868-webflash.bin file, I get the "The maximum acceptable content length is 16056320, but this request has 28197594" error message - which makes me think the router has a 16MB Flash whereas the dd-wrt firmware file is 28MB - that's why it is not working.

Why do you think I am having this issue and what can I do to fix it?

Thanks for your help in advance.

I looked at several builds for that box from this year and last. The current r35831 is the smallest of all I looked at but all are around 24 to 26 MB. The supported device wiki says 128 MB flash which doesn't mean much (my wndr3700v4 says the same but max flash is around 26MB) but sounds like maybe something else may have gone wrong.

If after flashing the factory to dd-wrt build you are taken to a dd-wrt page where you are then trying to flash the webflash.bin, the first one was successful.
If not you would still be in the d-link GUI.

Just because it has 128MB of flash, it doesn't mean all of it is for the firmware.
This is an issue with some of the asus routers.
Use this first ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2013/07-24-2013-r22118/dlink-dir868l/factory-to-ddwrt.bin
Then flash kong's std.bin here. http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/

I also am currently having a problem upgrading this router to dd-wrt. Unit is a D-Link DIR-868L, Rev A2, currently on factory firmware ver.:1.00DH. I have made multiple attempts to upgrade, but every attempt has received the message: "Invalid image."
FLASH ram shows as 128 MByte, although as has been stated there is no guarantee that it is all available. I'm currently in initial setup on this unit; it is connected through an AT&T uVerse router/gateway, model 5268AC. Any ideas? I've attempted first the original version recommended by the router database, then some of the betas recommended in the wiki [first and last on the LONG list], but the result is always the same, the "Invalid image" message. TIA

If you look here https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices#D-Link only A1 and B1 are supported.
A2 could be a deferent unit.

i recently got the DIR-868L rev A2 and i was scratching my head with what to do with it. it seems to me the whole revision thing might be a flip of a coin when getting those.
so after doing some research i decided to flash the 1.09 firmware for rev A1 from the dlink US site using the recovery mode since it also had the 1.00DH firmware.
if you install the 1.20 firmware using the recovery mode it will show the router as version A2 in the GUI and won't install DD-WRT factory.
installing the 1.09 resulted in showing it as rev A1 in the gui and was able to install the factory ddwrt r25974.
i've tried installing multiple versions of dd-wrt and most of them would have erratic wifi.
i then installed advanced tomato and it's been running great since then.
two things to note.
1- it runs hot 80C. so installing a fan helps.
2- i am not sure why, but my version shows it has 64K NVRAM while rev A1 was stated to be 32K NVRAM. so most builds made for rev A1 are limited to 32K NVRAM with no VPN or SSH.
hope this helps
