I love having my files accessible by a samba server connected to my desert router. However,I am a Windows user and the known issue with the NTFS file system becoming dirty after a router reboot when it's not disconnected first is driving me crazy. I know how to get it back up by connecting my drives to a computer but I was wondering if there is another solution. I am willing to change the file system type to ext4 but that only Linux, right?
I need to be able to read/write to the drive from a Windows computer.
Any recommendations on how I could figure out the best option to this NTFS becoming dirty?
Where I live there has been multiple power outages late so I don't have the option to safely eject the drive prior to the router restarting.

NTFS is not native linux FS...so it takes its toll..
as far as shutdown moment...yes it can happen to have a dirty drives...
you can scan and fix the drive as long as it uses linux https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=335046
you can always install drivers to use ext linux FS on Windows machines...at least that is what i do
in terms of OS access...if you use the samba option on the DDWRT FS doesn't matter..you can access your files with various OS systems as long as samba works ok... _________________ Atheros

Windows doesn't care what filesystem is on the Samba server, never has. How many times does it have to be stated, how many times does it have to be reiterated? Did it *ever* say that you must have a Windows filesystem for Samba shares in the docs? _________________ "The woods are lovely, dark and deep,

I tried looking online on how to install ext4 drivers on window 11 but I didn't find anything that simple to do. I found a way that looks like I need to run commands. Do you have any recommendations where I can start to look for instructions on how to install ext4 drivers on windows? Sorry I am a noob

In fact if im not wrong..you can mount ext on ~ Win 10 with no problem...
What i use on all my DDWRT routers USB drives is ext2, as you don't need more, only if you use an external Hard Drive, than you can go ext3/4...and the only windows i have, is Win 7 ultimate and ages ago, i installed a driver for ext2 FS and im happily using it ever since...
Why are ext4 drivers needed for Windows? Your router is running on Linux which already has ext4 support. It is serving your files to you. ext4 is not needed on your client windows 11 machine. Does that make sense? The disk format of the server does not have to be the same as the disk format of the client since it is only serving files. _________________ Netgear XR500 - Gateway

The reason I mentioned the ext4 is because I didn't want to run into any file size limitations or anything as such so I just wanted to go with the lastest.
Currently I have a 4TB (NTFS) external hard drive connected to the USB 3 port in the router. I have samba running on it via the DDWRT router. I transfer files into the hard drive from several clients (Windows 10, windows 11 and Android phones). Files include small and large files. I also run Plex on one of my windows devices with the the file source being mapped network drive.
Everything has been working perfectly except for this recent issue with power outages leading to a dirty drive.
I am willing to change over to a ext (2/3/4) format but would rather just do it once for obvious reasons. As many of you can probably tell, I only have enough knowledge to get myself in trouble lol so any advice on the best changes to be made would be greatly appreciated.

I have a similar setup. I have a 4TB SSD HD (ext4) hooked up to my XR500 via USB 3 port. It serves files to my windows machine, linux machine, phone, tablet.... _________________ Netgear XR500 - Gateway

That's great to hear. So, format my external hard drive to ext4 then copy from my back up drive. After backup is complete (hoping I don't lose any files 🤞) I should still be able to map a network drive in the windows machine, right?

Would it be possible to transfer your files to your computer or another hard drive, format the hard drive that you want to use to ext4 using the DDWRT GUI and then transfer your files back onto it?
BTW, the format feature is located in the NAS tab. _________________ Netgear XR500 - Gateway

That is doable. I just have a secondary backup HDD just in case. So I'll just format then transfer everything over. Thank you so much for your help.
