well, its been 4 years without issue, until............

ok, ISP doubled our speed, so, as you do, you run speed tests and you download stuff Smile
speeds were showing around half of what I should have had, 140/250mb, hmm, rebooted, restarted, no difference, so I installed latest DDwrt, factory reset and boom, full speed, set up dns servers, wifi ssid's and PW's, set up VPN, saved, restarted, back to half speed (traffic not through vpn) and no vpn ???

days later i am still in the same boat, after a fresh install I get full speed, as soon as I add the vpn, the router drops to half speed, (non vpn traffic) but the vpn will not even start.

SFE and CTF are active

I even went back to a feb 2022 build, that was the last build I had installed and working fine.

cannot post vpn log as it never creates one unless it connects

Upgrade to the latest build and **after** update reset to defaults.

Put settings in manually do not restore from a backup.

On Basic Setup Page use CTF for software flow offloading and CTF&FA for flow acceleration.

Then your speed should be optimal.

Use WireGuard instead of OpenVPN.
OpenVPN is very cpu intensive so drags your router down.

Both WireGuard and Open VPN docs are stickies (first few threads) in the Advanced Networking forum

Upgrade to the latest build and **after** update reset to defaults. Yes tried that.

Put settings in manually do not restore from a backup. always do that

On Basic Setup Page use CTF for software flow offloading and CTF&FA for flow acceleration. yes set that

Then your speed should be optimal. Speed was optimal, it just halved when I inputted the vpn info

Use WireGuard instead of OpenVPN. Didnt see Wireguard as an option when I set up the vpn

Reading the WG thread now. TY

EDIT, forgot to mention that I tried Fresh Tomato too, I had the same issues, is that kernel related or is my router about to be retired ? (or maybe its just me Very Happy)

OpenVPN is very resource intensive, normal throughput LAN<>WAN with OpenVPN on your router is about 40 Mb/s, WireGuard about 110 Mb/s.

Both WireGuard and OpenVPN guides mention this.

My Netgear R7800 with dual core Arm A15 at 1725 MHz does 85 Mb/s on OpenVPN and over 300 Mb/s running WireGuard

My DL-WRX36 Quad core arm A53 at 2200 MHz does over 800 MB/s running WireGuard.

If you want gigabit speeds with VPN and QoS you need a modern x86 CPU.

I'm not really worried about the speed through the VPN, I know that its never going to be the same as unencrypted traffic due to the cpu, its the traffic that is "not" going through the vpn that is getting halved when the vpn has been set up, I would expect non vpn traffic to be largely unaffected.

Speed with VPN not installed/active is 276mb
Speed with VPN installed 120/140mb this is NON VPN traffic

Ok, just reflashed to latest DD-WRT
Set CTF CTF&FA
set ssid and passwords
enabled privoxy
VPN not installed

speed down to 130mb

I think it might be privoxy that is causing the issue, it hasnt before tho

Had a look at installing wireguard (openvpn is set up correctly but keeps giving auth error, even nord techs dont know why lol)
cannot find any config files on Nord website, it looks like they do kind of support it, but they are not hosting pss/keys that I can find.
looks like im stuck, again Very Happy

I have turned off Privoxy for know, speeds are where they should be, I dont know why by using "adblocker" it halves my speeds.

NordVPN does not support WireGuard on the router, reason why NordVPN is not on my recommended list.

If you have an auth error with OpenVPN, it is not setup correctly.
How to setup see the DDWRT OpenVPN Client setup guide, there is a paragraph about NordVPN.

Since a couple of months you need a new encrypted username and password i.e. service credentials for NordVPN.
See the NordVPN site, the regular username password are not used any more.

If you followed the DDWRT OpenVPN client setup regarding setting up NordVPN and is is not working, then please Post a screenshot of the OpenVPN Setup page (whole page) and the OpenVPN Status page (whole page.

For Ad blocking there are a couple of light weight DNS blocking solutions available search the forum, for an example: https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=331271&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Are you using your encrypted user and passwords not your email in dd-wrt?
Sign in to
https://my.nordaccount.com/dashboard/nordvpn/
Find manual setup on right of page, use these credentials.
This maybe why its not connecting but we are guessing without screen shots/log.

Ok, updated again

VPN is now working, it is Nord's issue, I spoke to 5-6 agents, changed my Nord PW, they all checked setup, nothing works, the last tech gave me a new 7 day account, changed the user/pass and it fires up first time, they have no idea what the issue is, but they "think" there is an issue with my Nord credentials, as their tech's have got me to change my PW multiple times it has messed up their authentication server or something.

Yes foz111, been using the encrypted user/PW since they started using them a while back. TY tho.

Will look at wireguard again, but networking has never been my strongest skill Smile

Just want to add for speed a piece to check is the MTU, for the VPN may need to be different than the open internet, mine is. I found that on the main set up the manual setting of 1412 provided me with the best speed using Wireguard and NordVPN. Your millage may very please validate your settings/results.

I have not seen this noted as a validation but it should be added to some sticky in my opinion. Example I have a fiber 1gb and see that (validated on fast.com) but on the VPN side it is around 200mb, without the MTU setting it is around 75mb.

Hope this helps others going forward.

That is already in the manual for a long time:
Quote:
If your provider (or networks in between) also support IPv6, even if you are not, then you should choose 1420 instead of 1440 (or 1412 for PPPoE), otherwise you will get MTU problems (see troubleshooting section of the WireGuard Server setup guide).
As IPv6 is often supported 1420/1412 are the recommended MTU settings, although 1440/1432 can give you a little bit extra throughput if there is no IPv6 involved.
