Hi, this is my first post here and I am new to the subject. I am seeking some information and advice please.
I have a pair of EOC 8610+ devices (original Seneo fw,) set up as a bridge link between two buildings. The device at the WAN end is configured as an AP and the remote device as Bridge. The DHCP server is before the AP at the WAN end and, as many subscribers will be aware, DHCP will not work over the bridge which means I must used fixed IPs on the remote subnet.
I have read a good few posts on the community forum which suggests that even with dd-wrt this problem is common and that it may be due to a fault in the definition of wireless standards. So my questions are:-
1. Is it possible to have DHCP work over a 5.8GHz wireless bridge or is "MAC address translation" inevitable whichever fw is installed.
2. If dd-wrt can provide the functionality I seek, is it worth trying to flash 8610 with dd-wrt or should I just purchase a pair of 5610 devices with dd-wrt installed?
3. Having read some of the posts here I am less than confident I could flash a Seneo unit without bricking it. If I buy the 5610 units from the shop with dd-wrt installed, will updates of firmware then be possible using web interface and as easy as with manufacturers fw?

Hi Sash. Thanks for the info concerning 8610+. In that case do you have answers concerning true transparency wrt dhcp on 5610.
My network architecture has subnet defined at a firewall which is also the dhcp server for the subnet. Everything beyond the firewall port is on one subnet and that includes the AP and Bridge devices to facilitate easy control access. Half of the available addresses on subnet are set as available for allocation by dhcp but requesting machines are all on far side of bridge, hence the need for true transparency.
I cannot afford to purchase a pair of 5610 from the dd-wrt shop without the confirmation I seek and I would appreciate clarification when you have time please.
OK Sash. Thanks for that but as you will be aware WDS compromises performance. Do you know and can you explain why there is no transparency for DHCP and MAC address translation takes place? Is it a defect in the software or inherent in the standard as specified? Grateful for further advice or reading suggestions when you have time.

Hi Sash, sorry I am not communicating clearly. My understanding is that WDS is a work around for my original problem and that WDS compromises performance. Where I started from is trying to find out why there is no transparency in a wireless bridge and MAC address translation takes place.
From reading the threads here I am not convinced that anybody has succeeded in getting DHCP to work across a wireless bridge without WDS.
Please let me know if you will be working on installing DD-WRT on the 8610+ any time soon.

who told u this? its wrong for a simple wds-ap - wds-sta environment.
OK. As I recall I read it in the wiki and also elsewhere but leaving that aside, please can you clarify what you mean by wds-sta?
I have already outlined my configuration earlier in this thread. At present I have Firewall, (which is DHCP server for the subnet involved,)>AP (1st 8610+) 100m+ space between buildings > Bridge (2nd 8610+) >LAN to clients.
How should I set up the two 8610+ devices to enable the DHCP to work. Do I need to have both set as APs with WDS turned on on both?
