I feel like a fool for posting this, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to reset the root password in Telnet?

passwd **** should do it
or maybe wl passwd ****
but they don't?

I'm using a wrt54gl with Firmware: DD-WRT v23 SP2 (09/15/06) std

Anyone have any idea what my problem is?

Thanks,
Jason

I also cannot seem to save my changes (i.e. ssid, encryption state, etc).

I have an ok knowledge of linux and networking, but dd-wrt is beating me bad!!

If I can save my changes and change the root password via telnet (windows telnet btw) I'll disappear forever PROMISE!!!!

Thanks

since the telnet worked fine, i typed this at the prompt:
nvram set http_passwd = "admin"
*pressed enter*
nvram commit
*pressed enter*

now it works.

nvram http_passwrd = admin
nvram commit

Doesn't seem to work? I tried replacing admin with my name and that didn't work, this os really like the admin for password. I can change this in the GUI but don't want to... Long story to be posted later. But for now I need to write the admin password via the command line. ANY HELP???? Or am I an idiot, and not doing it right?

The previous commands resulted in having to telnet back into the router and login, admin was the password

Thanks

Doing what everyone else did:

setuserpasswd [username] [password]

This deleted *ALL* users in /etc/passwd except for "root" and "reboot". It does reset "root"'s password...sets "reboot"'s to the same one...and deletes all other entries in the file.

Anyone have any idea why this is happening and how I can get it to keep the rest of the entries?

I am using an ASUS RT-N16 w/ Mega, 14896, v24sp2, k26. I've installed OTRW and Samba 3.5. I'm using Putty SSH.

Thanks in advance!

complete novice - i found this finally after searching google after i forgot the DD-WRT username i set through DD-WRT web interface

i used telnet to log in on Windows 7 and this command

setuserpasswd [username] [password]

where i simply replaced [username] for root and [password] for admin in the above command and it worked! i could login to web interface again and reset the password (i kept username as root this time!)

meant no hard reset nonsense required thank you Smile

Thanks man! You ara save my life ! Wink

I was having this problem, but I'm not understanding how to change the password alone !? I did not change it, interesting that the password that I had configured, worked to log in via SSH.

What could have happened?

How do you get to this point though. When I telnet to my router I use the commandline 'telnet 192.168.1.1' and am then presented with my routers name (Linksys E4200) and a login prompt.

If I try logging in using root/admin it's incorrect. If I type in setuserpasswd it asks for a password. I can't get past the login/password stage in order to enter any other commands.

This thread regarded changing/resetting password (and GUI user) when already logged in to telnet (or ssh). There are cases where GUI login stops working but telnet/ssh is fine. If you can't log in to telnet/ssh nor GUI, then you have to reset; reset button should suffice - hold until the lights change (~10-30s). Don't 30-30-30 an ARM router. This may help:

OK thanks that clarified a lot and I have been able to get into my router now. Cheers and thanks for the help.
