Is this hedgehog indicating an antenna arms-race?

Will be interesting to see how the Broadcom 6-stream performs..

More on Broadcom Xstream here: (and Netgear R8000) http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-news/32429-ac3200-routers-by-july

This is running 3 streams on 2.4 GHz band and 3 streams on the 5GHz band. The AC87U AC2300 will be faster as it has 4 streams on the 5GHz AC band. The 6 antennas is a marketing scam to take your money.

Actually, the 6 antennas are because there are two separate 5 GHz radio.

Thanks Merlin. So is there only 3 spacial streams per 5GHz band? I read an article that the AC87U is still faster.

Correct. The RT-AC87U is 4x4, but the RT-AC3200 is 3x3 (per radio).

For client throughput, the AC87U is faster (assuming you have a 4x4 capable client). For multiple clients throughput, the AC3200 will be faster. You will be able, for instance, to keep your 450 Mbits clients on one radio, and the 1300 Mbits AC clients on the other radio, both running at their full speed.

That's why the AC3200 doesn't make the AC87U obsolete before launch - they both have different usage scenarios.

Something tells this could easily be a +$300 router Sad

I have an AC66U with an AC56 wireless card strapped onto my HTPC downstairs maybe 25 feet...and I still see see slight choppiness in framerate and have tried tweaking channels and many other settings.

Why is streaming 1080p so hard? Razz

I already added support for the Netgear R8000 which has the same hw, thus if BrainSlayer gets one it is just an hour work to add support for the AC3200. Asus does not send units to me, thus unlikely that I add support for it.

He has already added support for D-Link DIR-890L so he can surely manage to do it for RT-AC3200 as soon as he gets a sample.

BUMP. Smile

Still using my RT-AC87U before I switch to the AC3200 I would like dd-wrt, I want to raise the transmission to 1amp and use the OpenVPN server.

I'm wondering whether the unique capabilities that the asus has like 3g/4g dongle support and dual-wan will work with dd-wrt as well. Actually I know dual-wan will, but how about that 3g/4g usb dongle support? With it's stock firmware the 3g/4g usb can be set as a second WAN as well in failover mode or load balancing. Hmmm.. very interesting this router is.

the AC87 has also disadvantages. 4x4, yes. but have you seen a 4x4 capable client yet? the AC87 has also no client mode support on the 4x4 radio. technically the chipset can operate in client mode, but the hw design does not allow it.

for the AC3200, we will support it as soon as i get the hw into my hands. i already commited some support code for it, just out of the informations i got from the gpl source. but it never has been tested
