Hello, i would like to buy a rt-n12 d1 to replace a broken repeater but i'm not sure if this one can do a wireless bridge. Anyone can confirm if it is possible (dd-wrt or not) ?
yeah it'll do repeater, repeater bridge about as well as any
I can't tell you what to use --- I don't know what you plan to use it for anyways.
Google will help you in most everything these days but since I'm already here --
yea, you will have to unzip to get to the .trx firmware.
Just install thru the firmware upgrade page from factory firmware
Since this is a dd-wrt forum I guess I should mention it --
DD-WRT runs ok on this router but if using it one thing to note for best wireless results keep tx power
about 33 or less for normal home use.
Thank you for a descriptive reply. Sorry for such a late answer!
Again, to make sure, I can be much calmer with using tomato and just login into router's admin page and use the upgrade button there, instead of jumping through hoops like with DD-WRT? And I should not run into any problems, but if I do, it is reversible?
As for what I'll be using it for, just simple home use for me and other people living here. My focus is speed, reliability, and if it has any security features - that's a bonus. I don't need any controls or logs, in fact - I would turn them off.

I have the Asus RT-N12+ (Plus) Router. Does anyone know which image I could use to get DD-WRT running or at least some parts of it? Im pretty sure that router has an 8mb flash but I'm not 100% sure because it's outsside is all chinese so i tried to read some start protocoll in the gui.
thanks in advance.
btw I'm new to this stuff.
Does anyone have any of the mini builds working stable as a wireless repeater? All of the devices connected wirelessly get disconnected every few minutes. The mega builds work great but don't have space for jffs and I have to store the AutoAP script on the router for it to work properly.

which is the best/latest firmware.
which is the best of the several mentioned methods to flash the router.

^ Welcome to the world of 3rd party firmware. ^
I can't help you with open VPN, but as far as which F/W version, start scanning thru the thread that are specifically for new F/W releases and look for your model and see what the reports are. Don't go with the most recent, lay back 2-4 versions especially if they came out in short period of time (say, 4 in one month).
Look at wikidevi for device specs; appears Padavan works on all the ASUS RT-N12+ versions as weel as ASUS RT-N12E B1.

I'll look at it closer when get back to the homeworld....but yes that works on my two rtn12d1
This router has never been fully supported by ddwrt... probably cause they never had the unit...and now far other things occupy their time.
they are good cheap routers but if anyone has the option an E2500 would be perferabe as an equivalent thereabouts.
I still recommend tomato on the rtn12d1 if you want less hassle

thank u all for the advice and updating the wiki. certainly given a newbie something to try tomorrow.
the reason i went for the rtn12 was because the vpn server,
myexpat network (i specifically want certain uk channels)
recommended the rtn12 which they sell for 150 usd with something called SABIA software installed. they did also say would work with dd-wrt. so i thought for 25 euros was worth a try
