I can't tell you what to use --- I don't know what you plan to use it for anyways.
Google will help you in most everything these days Smile but since I'm already here --

Useful Shippy Tomato links:

'Router List'

'Top Download Directory'

Lastest for RT-N12-D1 (last Shibby publicly put out was 7 months ago--- May 2017)
http://tomato.groov.pl/download/K26RT-N/build5x-140-MultiWAN/Asus%20RT-Nxx/tomato-K26-1.28.RT-N5x-MIPSR2-140-Max.zip

Note --- last several build he put out are MultiWan which you don't need and would be just as well off using the 132
http://tomato.groov.pl/download/K26RT-N/build5x-132-EN/Asus%20RT-Nxx/tomato-K26-1.28.RT-N5x-MIPSR2-132-Max.zip

yea, you will have to unzip to get to the .trx firmware.
Just install thru the firmware upgrade page from factory firmware

Since this is a dd-wrt forum I guess I should mention it --
DD-WRT runs ok on this router but if using it one thing to note for best wireless results keep tx power
about 33 or less for normal home use.

Thank you for a descriptive reply. Smile Sorry for such a late answer!

Again, to make sure, I can be much calmer with using tomato and just login into router's admin page and use the upgrade button there, instead of jumping through hoops like with DD-WRT? And I should not run into any problems, but if I do, it is reversible?

As for what I'll be using it for, just simple home use for me and other people living here. My focus is speed, reliability, and if it has any security features - that's a bonus. I don't need any controls or logs, in fact - I would turn them off.

I have the N12-D1 and have dd wrr dd-wrt.v24-18774_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini installed.

I'm using it as a repeater and the wireless isn't stable.

Which dd wrt firmware is the most stable for basic simply usage and which instructions should I use to update the firmware?

Does anyone have any of the mini builds working stable as a wireless repeater? All of the devices connected wirelessly get disconnected every few minutes. The mega builds work great but don't have space for jffs and I have to store the AutoAP script on the router for it to work properly.

Hello all. new to the forum and confused with this thread.
the thread is over 2 1/2 years old now and there seems to be so many sugestions / files / opinions it has become very confusing.

can anyone please advice me i want to use my rt-n12 for open vpn.

which is the best/latest firmware.
which is the best of the several mentioned methods to flash the router.
sorry if these questions have been asked before but i think due to the length of the thread it has become very confusing.

^ Welcome to the world of 3rd party firmware. ^

I can't help you with open VPN, but as far as which F/W version, start scanning thru the thread that are specifically for new F/W releases and look for your model and see what the reports are. Don't go with the most recent, lay back 2-4 versions especially if they came out in short period of time (say, 4 in one month).

For what you want and to come thru all with your sanity intact I suggest you install a shibby tomato firmware
http://tomato.groov.pl/?page_id=69

DD-WRT will do ovpn on that router but tomato tis much easier Razz

Don't expect much speed ---- prolly 'bout 8 ~ 10 Mbps at very best thru ovpn on that router.
more like 4 ~ 6 Mbps if I remember correctly --

good luck -

Not supported; there are several threads about it. However, there is a third-party f/w that does; Padavan. See:
https://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=1072995#1072995
https://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=310486

Look at wikidevi for device specs; appears Padavan works on all the ASUS RT-N12+ versions as weel as ASUS RT-N12E B1.

It seems the key is to flash k26 twice and not reset after flashing to k3x (several k26/k3x routers are like this).

FWWI; I would look for another (newer) Router that is openVPN friendly. That surely isn't. Wink

I'll look at it closer when get back to the homeworld....but yes that works on my two rtn12d1
This router has never been fully supported by ddwrt... probably cause they never had the unit...and now far other things occupy their time.

they are good cheap routers but if anyone has the option an E2500 would be perferabe as an equivalent thereabouts.

I still recommend tomato on the rtn12d1 if you want less hassle Rolling Eyes

thanks for your work on wiki stuff

thank u all for the advice and updating the wiki. certainly given a newbie something to try tomorrow.
the reason i went for the rtn12 was because the vpn server,
myexpat network (i specifically want certain uk channels)
recommended the rtn12 which they sell for 150 usd with something called SABIA software installed. they did also say would work with dd-wrt. so i thought for 25 euros was worth a try
