My R7000 was on 23435 OLDD, just flashed 26500, have couple questions:
1. access restriction using MAC address is still not working, is that correct? Access restriction using IP address works fine.
2. Tx power is defaulted to 71, I thought I read somewhere this value is static and does not really change anything, is that true or can the value be increased for better range?
3. Compare to 23435 OLDD 2.4G, my HP tablet used to have 4 wifi bars upstairs and now it is down to 1 bar and really slow, does that have something to do with different drivers or is there any setting change required?
Thanks
Don't know about 1 and 3. For 2, you can (and probably should) change the tx power to a higher value for better performance.
A)
rest to factory values and reconfigure the router if you did not do that after upgrading.
There are a lot of changes and several need/require a reset to ensure proper operation.
#1
MAC restrictions work for me (Kong firmware, don't run BS so cant say).
Did you create the restriction and then reboot the router to see if it worked?
#2
71 is a ddwrt value = "auto" od default in stock firmware.
This tells the driver to do what it wants for power.
You can increase or decrease this value as you see necessary. Each persons wifi environment is different so no one size fits all. Test test test.
#3
Again, this could be the drivers and or something else. Testing in your environment is going to be the best thing.
Try different channels, power outputs, beamforming etc...

Have you tried forgetting the wireless network on the clients where you can do that (like a laptop)? Logging on fresh allows the client to rebuild the connection profile. Rebooting clients can also help, for basically the same reason.
Don't know what you've tried to troubleshoot...have you power-cycled the router? Did you reset it to factory defaults after flashing and manually re-enter your settings?
There shouldn't be any setting changes required between 2d435 and 26500, just the factory reset to defaults and manually re-entering your settings mentioned above.
You might also try re-orienting the router/antennas...while it isn't likely that the optimal orientation has changed between builds, the process of flashing/resetting/power cycling can cause you to bump or move the router or the antennas. Playing with that for the clients that have weak signals can be very helpful, I've found.
Peripherally, you might see if there's a newer version of the wireless driver for your HP laptop. Upgrading client drivers can sometimes help with newer versions of router firmware as well.
Anyways, hope that you get your problems taken care of. I didn't see that radical of a signal strength difference between 23435 and 26500 here at my place.
Edit: and, as slidermike said, the "71" default for tx power is actually the hardware default ("auto"). I always use that, it works well for me. I've spent some time playing with tx power, and could not improve the router throughput playing with tx power, so I just stay with the "71" default, and recommend that to others, as well.
Thank you for the replies, after 2 days of playing with 26500M, following is a more detail summary:
. From reading discussions on this forum, each time I change firmware, I always do a factory reset and then a power cycle. I manually reconfigure settings using key values from screen shots captured in configuration of 23425M OLDD. Although I have backup files, I never restore them after an upgrade. I usually power cycle the connected devices after a router firmware change.
. Two reasons why I want to upgrade:
1. access restriction does not work in v24-sp2 (06/13/14) kongac - build 24345M (OLDD)
2. After 8 months of steady usage with no issue and no setting change, all of a sudden, the 2.4G main wireless network disappeared from wireless selection list but the guest network (also 2.4G) continues to work fine, also, the router will reset to factory default after each power cycle, I suspect the firmware is corrupted
. After upgrading to v24-sp2 (03/23/15) kongac - build 26500M, I noticed:
1. Access restriction works fine (thanks to slidermike, setting the restrictions then reboot did the trick)
2. The 2.4G signal seems to be much weaker, i.e. 1 wifi bar instead of 4 upstairs and speedtest shows much slower. Adjusting the Tx Power did not help much, also, any value other than 71 seems to make the connection unstable. Both HP tablet and laptop are older devices but have the latest mfg device drivers already so not sure if there is anything else I can do
3. The 5G side works fine except the signal strength is also slightly lower but not as severe as 2.4G
4. The guest network does not work (I tried power cycle, changing the SSID etc, can see it, cannot connect to it)
. Because of the 2.4G signal strength, guest network issue and pressure from other users in the house (just cannot live without wifi for long !), I decided to flashed back to v24-sp2 (06/13/14) kongac - build 24345M (OLDD), then reenter all settings manually, everthing works fine now, maybe the firmware was indeed corrupted before.
. Questions:
1. Can someone confirm access restrictions does not work in v24-sp2 (06/13/14) kongac - build 24345M (OLDD)
2. Is there an issue with guest network in v24-sp2 (03/23/15) kongac - build 26500M
As far as I recall there was no known issue with guest wifi in a long time. Like mid-2014.
Have you looked at Kongs guest wifi configuration page?
Maybe there is a step your missing or forgetting.
I am less sure about the access restrictions but again don't recall anything standing out as a known issue. _________________ Router currently owned:

would you be kind enough to point me to Kong's guest wifi setup or is it the same as the one referenced in your link (R7000 specific Tips/Tricks) but not by Kong.
I looked at the guest wifi setup in your link but it is more for security in separating the home network from guest network etc. In my case, I cannot even connect to it with default setup.

So, after getting the links, did a lot more reading, decided to give 26500M another shot while everyone in the house is out and about, here is a summary:
. once again, slidemike is correct, I missed out on a couple guest network settings, once done, guest network runs fine.
. the wifi signal on 2.4G is still significantly weaker upstairs on the HP tablet and laptops, based on Kong and forum users suggestions, I tried many adjustments i.e. Tx power, channels, beam forming etc, I spent a few good hours on this, I was patient, reboot after each change then document changes & performance in a spreadsheet, did not see improvement enough as compare to 24345(OLDD).
. Since 24345(OLDD) performs great with all devices in the house and the only issue is access restrictions not working, I flashed back to 24345(OLDD).
One last question:
Is there a CLI command or a config file somewhere I can use or edit to set access restriction instead of using the web interface?
Good job gw!
yes you can manage the access restrictions via the command line but its less simple.
What you need to do is add 1 of your rescrictions, apply it and then open a telnet session so you can run the following to see what it added.
nvram show | grep filter_
that will show you what is in your config with the keyword filter_
You have to add " " to the start and end of a command line variables to tell the router where to start/stop. There are several variables needed such as the time for them to be in effect, how/what devices your filtering & what is being filtered/denied.
I do 2 filters. 1 is a deny all traffic to certain URL's from my smart TV's & the other blocks certain URL's to the whole network.
Here is how I do my 2 filters via command line.
nvram set filter_web_host2="outbrain.com< >doubleclick.net< >zedo.com< >korrelate.net< >moatads.com< >graemenoble.id.au< >us-u.openx.net< >aproductmsg.com< >googleadservices.com< >chartbeat.com< >pubmine.com< >ad.doubleclick.net< >googleads.g.doubleclick.net< >pagead2.googlesyndication.com< >aka.spotxcdn.com< >video.ybpangea.com< >x.kinja-static.com< >magnetic.t.domdex.com< >u1.mgcdn.com< >"
nvram set filter_web_host1="ibis.lgappstv.com< >yumenetworks.com< >smartshare.lgtvsdp.com< >yume.com< >smartclip.com< >smartclip.net< >ad.lgappstv.com< >GB.info.lgsmartad.com< >"
nvram set filter_rule2="\$STAT:2\$NAME:outbrain\$DENY:0\$\$"
nvram set filter_rule1="\$STAT:2\$NAME:LG_Filter\$DENY:0\$\$"
nvram set filter_ip_grp2="0 0 0 0 0 0 192.168.1.2-192.168.1.254 0.0.0.0-0.0.0.0"
nvram set filter_mac_grp1="94:44:44:01:26:35 84:9C:A6:95:B5:63 00:24:1D:D3:C1:6C 88:03:55:9A:25:99"
nvram set filter_id=2
nvram set filter_tod2=0:0 23:59 0-6
nvram set filter_tod1=0:0 23:59 0-6
You will need to make sure to have all the variables in place or else it wont take. Its not that hard.
Do it once and then its just copy/paste going forward.

slidermike: thanks a lot for the detail instructions !
Since I did not get a definitive answer from anyone to confirm access restriction is indeed not working on 24345(OLDD), I decided to give it one last try, I deleted all existing rules, save the settings and power cycle the router, then I reenter one rule to place restriction based on MAC addr, save it and viola, it started working again. (yes, I don't give up easy..). I guess clearing all rules and power cycle clears up the issue. So, I stand corrected again, access restrictions DO work in 24345(OLDD).
I am going to try entering the remainder of rules using CLI just to learn in case in the future the Web GUI entry acts up again.
Posted: Mon Jul 20, 2015 11:05 Post subject: Port Forwarding
Hi. I noticed that when I tried to put more than 13 port forwards into the new R27525 firmware of the R7000, it will not take any more than 13 assignments. I have 19 port forwards I need to install, but once I either save or apply settings, the 14th assignment onwards just disappears.
I still have 42kbs of space on my NVRAM so I know it's not a space issue.
