Folks

I just bought the R6700 on Amazon in good sale it should arrive Tuesday. 2/21

Can you guys help me out with the use case and benefit to modify boardID and get this device up to R7000?

I see two benefits mentioned in this forum

1. expand 2.4GHz bandwidth from 450 to 600 - but to reach this speed on your client you will need to have clients supporting turboQAM. This technology makes it possible for the 2.4GHz band with 40 MHz channels to achieve a maximum transfer rate of 200 Mbps per data stream. Multiply that by three (the number of data streams) and we get 600 Mbps.
TurboQAM uses QAM-256 instead of QAM-64 .Maximum data rates are increased on the 2.4 GHz band through the addition of VHT Modulation and Coding Scheme(MCS) values 8 and 9, which support the highly efficient modulation rates in 256-QAM. The majority of Broadcom 802.11ac clients are expected to support TurboQAM, but they may require an upgrade to the latest driver. Note that the 600 Mbps number applies to 40-MHz channels only.

So is this upgrade really going to make a difference in polluted 2.4Ghz frequency?

2. Nonsence mentions that the reason he did it is because OpenVPN is broken with PIA on all Kong firmwares that he tested on the R6700. This is from early 2016.

Can you guys explan to me the use case of "OpenVPN via PIA"? Could it be that this issue was fixed on latest R6700 DD-WRT firmware?

Is there any other reason worth risking a brick or crashing caused by non existed second USB while using R7000 FW?

That's all bullshit, there is a R6700 specific build, that is 100% identical to the R7000 build, only the signature of the chk is different so netgear fw accepts it.

Hello Kong can you put here the link for that build?

Is boardID change required for that build?

I found this file from February

dd-wrt.K3_R6700.chk - 2017-02-03 11:58 22M

should I just flash this straight from Netgear UI?

Great

do you guys know if this KONG`s version adds the 600Mbps on 2.4GHz and basically turns R6700 into R7000 ?

Don't know. Try it and see.
Do you have any clients capable of that anyway?

that is a good question!

the TurboQAM which enables 600Mbps on 2.4GHz is a Broadcom proprietary technology.

Broadcom was bought by AVAGO and stopped last year building WLAN cards!

So if you do not have Broadcom WLAN card which support TurboQAM than there is no difference between 1900 and 1750 routers.

I`m reading that people even with the real R7000 have problems to setup and achieve 600Mbps.

I have the R6700 arriving today and I have NB with Broadcom WLAN card which support QAM 256.

So will test it out.

I flashed - dd-wrt.K3_R6700.chk

it reports R7000 as a model.

in inSSIDer 4 on 2.4GHz it reports 450 not 600.

with my clients and polluted area I can`t get more than 144Mbps on 2.4GHz.

on 5GHz I can`t overcome 866Mbps

Why are you even getting 144 on the 2.4ghz? If it's a polluted area like you said, use only 20mhz width.
Don't be that person that contributes to the pollution.
What are your 5ghz clients capable of? What are your settings for the 5ghz?

Hello Malachi

I have done some testing and still can not figure out how to turn R6700 into a 600Mbps device. On top of it I have discovered one major issue using DD WRT on my R6700.

My WIFI setup at home consist of two WIFI APs , One is R6400 connected to Cable Modem from ISP and another AP now TP LINK N600 used with PPTP/VPN service. I bought R6700 to replace TP LINK. So I`m trying to setup R6700 as a VPN AP and I have PPTP service setup on it.

The problem I have is related to page load delay. I noticed that when I enter web page on my phone there is a lag of couple seconds before page loads up. Similar issues on my Android TV box when I open YOUTUBE.

So I have setup both APs ( TP LINK N600 and R6700 ) with the same setup and connection and tried to compare web page loading time.

The R6700 is ~2 seconds slower than TP LINK N600

I used:
R6700 with: DD-WRT v3.0-r31205M kongac (02/03/17)
TP LINK N600 with stock FW.
Test: used Google Chrome, Page Load time addon
Browser`s cache was erased after every page load test.
Both AP were connected to the same router. ( R6400 )
Both AP had the same PPTP/VPN account logged.

Also very strangely before the test I have performed "Restore Factory Defaults" and Model ID have changed from R7000 to R6700.

Here is a PDF with my setup.
http://vendo.wz.cz/R6700.pdf

So I`m thinking to next

- Try erase nvram ( do you know how? )
- Try moving back to some older DD WRT version

If you spot something significantly wrong in my setup please let me know.

EDIT:

1. Performed erase nvram via Telnet

- after setup I saw for few seconds on main page for wl0 showing 600 Mbps
- after another few seconds the speed dropped to 144Mbps
- InSSIDer 4.0 showing still max . 450Mbps
- Router Model changed itself from "R7000" to "Netgear R6700"
- I changed MTU from auto to manual and set 1436
- The couple seconds lag for PPTP connection still persist.

2. Do you have any recommended version I could downgrade to and check it out?

EDIT: the LAG is caused apparently by my VPN provider on the particular server I have been using. It is a coincidence that the latency got worst at same time as I was testing this router.

I have rolled back to 29300 and it keeps showing R7000, my inSIDer is still showing 450 max on 2.4GHz and my phone and PC is still unable to surpass 144Mbps .

After 2 days straight mastering RESET backwards / Forwards I give up. I do not care anymore.

It would be good to know though one day from KONG if he really opened R6700 to TurboQAM and 600Mbps or if it is just MODEL ID change. ( or if TurboQAM is faking Broadcom marketing unreachable fraud )
