Hello,

I'm using the latest build, v3.0-r31277, from factory.
I feel that the 5Ghz band is not very stable. Sometimes I get dropped and I still don't know why yet.
I'm used to use DDWRT on another router (TP-Link Archer C5) and it works a lot better.

Anyway, I'm missing an important feature: wireless client mode. The only options available are AP, Adhoc, Repeater and Repeated bridged.
Is there any reason why Client mode is not available?

Thank you

I love DD-WRT, but the 5Ghz performance on this device is just sad.
I'm not sure why, I think I've tried every setting and encryption.

It always eventually drops to around 5 Mbps and is just unusable.
The 2.4Ghz radio is fine though.

@wouterds, try using a higher channel between ch.149-165 and use 40MHz for channel bandwidth and see if it improves or not.

It's somewhat better but far from optimal, with stock firmware I can get up to 600Mbps connections. Also I remember using dd-wrt (a while ago, but on the same router, this one) and then also being able to get speeds up to 500Mbps.

Update: I re-flashed the router with the latest stable firmware, changed all my settings perfectly back they were before, and now I'm getting good speeds again!

@wouterds what version did you use?

I can't get good speeds anyway.
The behavior of the 5Ghz band is very very strange:

Here's my config:
1. I've the router connected to another one with repeater mode (2.4Ghz, N)
2. Configured 1 AP in 2.4Ghz
3. Configured 1 AP in 5Ghz.

Connected by cable I can download from the internet about 50mbps.
Connected to the 2.4Ghz network I can download about 16mbps (it's acceptable, I'm using the same bandwidth to connect to the other router).
Connected to the 5Ghz network the maximum I can get its 16mbps, just like I was connected to the 2.4Ghz! (I was expecting the same as the cable!)

Are there any thoughts about this?

WHICH STABLE VERSION DO YOU MEAN? Stock D-Link or DD WRT Stable version "Number"?

Can you link to it please?
Your screenshot shows 24 sp2 while Stable does not have that.
ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/stable/

The one from your screenshot seems to be this?

If anyone is interested I've compiled Padavan firmware for DIR-860L B1.

Can't compare becouse I compiled Padavan's first build next day I got 860L. No any issue. Works stable. I aslo increased wifi power levels for USA region.

Oh ok. For what reason(s) did you chose/ prefer this FW over DD WRT?

IMO Stability. Perfomance. Padavan uses native MTK drivers.

I just joined this forum after years of being just a reader. So I could say thanks. WOW, most appreciated.

I've used your padavan builds from the n750 thread since the day I bought the old belkin and its still my main router.

I bought a 860l b1 off ebay about a month ago running dd-wrt(feb build). It was recommend by many in the opensource community plus its hard to brick with its reset recovery menu.

Is there a proper procedure to flash padavan to the 860l? I read you mentioned to back up partition first.

Can it be flashed as simply as thru the dlink reset recovery menu?

Will we lose the reset recovery menu with padavan firmware?

Again a huge thanks for your time.

I’m not 100% sure about DD-WRT commands.
Put DIR-860L_3.4.3.9-099.trx and mtd2.bin on usb flash drive.
From DD-WRT connect via telnet:
cd {path to your usb drive}
cat /dev/mtdblock1 > mymtd1.bin
cat /dev/mtdblock2 > mymtd2.bin
mtd write -r DIR-860L_3.4.3.9-099.trx linux
When router powers up connect via ssh (login/pass admin/admin):
cd {path to your usb drive (/media/…)}
mtd_write write -r mtd2.bin "Factory"
Now router should be fully functional.
You can correct MAC addresses by commands lan_eeprom_mac, wan_eeprom_mac, radio2_eeprom_mac and radio5_eeprom_mac.
It is always possible to restore by recovery mode to stock or DD-WRT firmware. On DD-WRT restore your backup: mtd write -r mymtd2.bin "factory".
...
P.S. Image updated, USB led added.
P.P.S. 'factory' image doesn't work. So only way to flash is from telnet.
DD-WRT/OpenWRT/Padavan uses different partition layouts. Padavan uses 0x000000040000-0x000000050000 region for wifi eeprom. DD-WRT doesnt' use this region at all and it's 'defaults' partition in OpenWRT.

mtd write -r DIR-860L_3.4.3.9-099.trx linux

Its been a few years since I played with dd-wrt myself. Not since I got this router.
Thanks again for all the help.

I did back up mymtd1.bin and mymtd2.bin.

I was able to write the firmware and reboot if I use:
mtd -r write DIR-860L_3.4.3.9-099.trx linux.

but after reboot it won't allow an ssh connection to complete the second part
mtd_write write -r mtd2.bin "Factory"

After reboot only the dlink reset recovery menu method works to restore an image. Neither ssh and telnet were connecting.

But If I use
mtd write DIR-860L_3.4.3.9-099.trx linux

It writes without reboot and I don't lose connection to the router.
Is it ok to skip the reboot? and write thru the same telnet connection
mtd_write write -r mtd2.bin "Factory"

Or do you need that reboot and ssh connection to write correctly mtd2.bin?

My main concern is losing dlink's recovery menu partition since its the only thing that keeps this router going so easily.

Again thanks for all your time.

No. Partition layouts are different. You can try to flash from OpenWRT to 'defaults' partition.

It doesn't flash bootloader.
My router works rock stable with Padavan FW.
...
Updated mtd2.bin to default D-Link EEPROMs.
