Hello.

I try to flash DD-WRT to my ASUS AC66U.
I've tried few versions:
dd-wrt-25648-Asus_RT-AC66U.trx
dd-wrt-25697-Asus_RT-AC66U.trx
dd-wrt-29519-Asus_RT-AC66U.trx

I flashed it with ASUS Recovery and from webflash in original firware. I have wait few hours and still got recovery page. There is noi matter when i clean NVRAM it does not help.

After flashing router stuck on the ASUS Recovery Page:

There was only one working version but it has some bugs:
dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC.bin
http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt-ren/K3-AC/25015-SP1/dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC.bin

Could you tell why dedicated images won't boot up the device?

My recommendation is to flash the stock firmware (Asus firmware) back to the router from the recovery page and when the router can boot up normally, follow this wiki to flash dd-wrt: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Asus_RT-AC66U

My version of ASUS RT-AC66U:
H/W Version: B0 hw_version=1.5
CFE: 1.0.2.0 bl_version=1.0.2.0

I done all steps and it did not work.

I tried webflash from official versions:
  • ASUS RT-AC66U Firmware version 9.0.0.4.380.2695
  • ASUS RT-AC66U Firmware 3.0.0.4.378.9533 (that was the stock firmware)
  • ASUS RT-AC66U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.376.3626

With this DDWRT:
ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2014/12-22-2014-r25697/asus-rt-ac66u/

But I still got recovery page after webflash. Only power LED and 1LAN LED is working. Clearing NVRAM with WPS button does not help.

go buy a second 66u and try the correct procedure to flash to dd-wrt. If successful with the correct method, put the first one in the box and return it. I'd say something wrong with it.

But the router works fine on:
Tomato by shibby
AsusWRT
and dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC.bin from desipro.de

Just DD-WRT images does not work.

The file you're using is from 2014...

try one here

Do not run an "erase nvram" on this router.

Only reset with the GUI.

I have reset factory defaults on AsusWRT and then flash: dd-wrt-29519-Asus_RT-AC66U.trx and router stuck on Asus Recovery Page. I wait 30minutes then tried reset and clear NVRAM with WPS button. Still CFE Recovery page.

Maybe CFE version is the problem? My modem was manufactured in 2016. On every forum all people has:
1.0.1.X
but i've got:
1.0.2.X

I haven't JTAG (can't try older CFE), so maybe it is possible to monitor with serial what's going on during booting?

We cannot rule out that Asus have put a CFE on it that requires an encrypted firmware.

Maybe in the future asus will require encryption like android devices manufacturers because ASUS removed info from their website about DD WRT support:
www.asus.com/us/site/routers/DD-WRT/
http://imgur.com/DbH0QQU

ASUS do not require encrypted firmware:
Tomato by Shibby works fine, boots normal
and DD-WRT form desipro.de is working too, but it has some bugs with hot-spot: dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC.bin
http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt-ren/K3-AC/25015-SP1/dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC.bin After flash desipro.de it stuck for 1 mintue at asus recovery page and then reboot automatically and everything works.

So the only official trx does not work and i try get know why.

Nopper did you ever get this sorted out? I had the same issue the first time I flashed dd-wrt on my ac66u. IIRC what fixed it for me was

nvram erase via WPS button
flash stock firmware
nvram erase via WPS button
flash dd-wrt
nvram erase via WPS button

Just so everybody's on the same page, WPS nvram erase is accomplished by turning router power off, holding WPS button down for 5 sec, turning router power on, continue holding WPS button down for 10 sec, releasing WPS button.

I'm afraid ASUS will close their hardware Sad With new CFE DD-WRT won't work:
http://www.snbforums.com/threads/asus-firmware-will-change-the-verification-method.32357/

I have successfully downgrade CFE 1.0.2.0 (EU) to 1.0.1.6 (EU) and now i can install any DD-WRT firmware.

I have downgraded on 3 devices RT-AC66U:
ASUS RT-AC66U:
H/W Version: B0 hw_version=1.5
CFE: 1.0.2.0 bl_version=1.0.2.0
EU version

Dont forget, make a original CFE backup!!!

Check H/W version (1.50) and flash vendor, i've tested only ZENTEL. Replace mac adresses.

Command to check flash vendor:
Code:
dmesg | grep -e "flash" -e "nand" -e "amd" /tmp/syslog.log

There is a correct CFE 1.0.2.0 EU.

The last one was incorrect because it was a copy made from DD-WRT WebPanel. This one is made with dd.

Hello, i'm at my first experience trying to flash DDWrt firmware, i bought an Asus AC-66U with the goal to use it as an hotspot for guests of some holidays apartments (with Hotspotsystem service).

I had not success with flashing latest beta ddwrt firmware versions Sad

My configuration:
CFE version is 1.0.1.6
H/w version is B0
Zentel NAND flash with 2048B pages or 128KB blocks

I tried both with wiki procedure and with Asus Firmware restoration utility, clearing Vram at each step, as hubermania suggested :
nvram erase via WPS button
flash stock firmware
nvram erase via WPS button
flash dd-wrt
nvram erase via WPS button

After flashing ddwrt firmware the router keeps on rebooting (all leds flash together) many times, it is a loop, than the only thing to do to access the dashboard is to flash Asus firmware.

So : it seems the problem is not related to CFE version.

I know that a Tomato firmware is available for AC 66U but it is not supported by Hotspotsystem.

Please i ask to this community if i can try something else or i have to swith to another router, thanks.

I found another old topic describing the same boot-loop problem :
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=174398

This confirm it is not related to CFE version.

No solution yet ?
