I my opinion, an Asus RT-AC86U with Merlin firmware or a Netgear R7800 which will run Voxel, lots of folks like it, will also run DD-WRT. Kong has a build for it. So if you want to stay with DD-WRT then the R7800 would be my suggestion, however my AC86U just runs, no Internet or wireless drops, no reboots. Runs so good you forget about it. If you look on Netgear site and see the r8000 or r8000p do not consider them. Too many issues and Netgear does not seem to be in a hurry to fix.
Just wondering if there is any DD-WRT foru Guru out there who is still using WRT3200ACM? Mine is still working fine, but need to reboot from time to time. Otherwise, which router would you recommend to buy for a more stable/reliable router? Thx
My personal Opinion, Asus AC86U - RMerlin firmware.
No drops, no reboots, no issues.
After fighting with the WRT series since they released the WRT1900ACv1, I am surprised how much time I have on my hands running the Asus AC86U's instead. _________________ My "WRT" rant, and why I have gone ddwrt on x86, no more consumer routers. ( ac86u as access points & bridges )

WRT3200acm Beta r36104
Replaced Netgear EX7000 with WRT1900AC in WDS Station mode in my barn (500' away)
Use eth2 to connect to esp8266 devices (SONOFF switches and temp sensors)
Before these changes could not establish a viable link on 5 Ghz for more than 2 minutes and could not connect to any esp8266 devices.
Use a second wrt1900ac for home entertainment and some cameras and sensors. Also connected WDS Station.
Throughput on the 3200 is excellent. WiFi and internet all good.
Last few beta builds have been great with my WRT3200ACM- OpenVPN speeds are amazing and WIFI works great. I usually start from scratch with each new build, takes about 2 hours to get all my configs in but seems to resolve any issues I may have had in the past.I am not sure even why I bother to upgrade most of the time as any of the last few builds seemed to work better than I could have hoped.

I agree. No dealing with daily issues anymore with the ac86u as my network router.

With my recent experience with Netgear's r8000 and r8000p I do not have faith in Netgear and fixing issues with their firmware. I have not tried the r7800, but folks that have them like them. Voxel does something similar that RMerlin does for the Asus routers. Take the current OEM firmware fix some issues and maybe add a little something, pretty much stay with the OEM firmware rather then like DD-WRT.
My Asus ac86u has been up for 33 days without and wireless or Internet issues. Last reboot was for a firmware update. Never could say this when running the wrt3200 wither OEM or DD-WRT. Know that Marvell/Linksys/Belkin have improved the firmware that BS has access to since I gave up on them so am sure it is better now. _________________ Unifi Security Gateway:Unifi Firmware Netgear r7800:Voxel Firmware Modem:Netgear CM500V voice and Data. Given the problems with the r8000/8000p, I almost believe netgear got lucky with the r7800. But the r7800 firmware ui is painful to look at. Almost like a webpage from the 1990s. I really wish they would overhaul it.

Couldn't agree more about Linksys and their terrible UI. They indeed got "lucky" with the R7000 and R7800 both being excellent. The R7800 also has DD-WRT, XWRT, Voxel, DumaOS port, and OpenWrt 18.06 hnyman builds. DD-WRT is of course excellent for both R7000/R7800, including my own. Because of all these firmwares R7800 might be the current best router choice, with the next two below a close second...
Back on topic - WRT3200ACM and WRT32X are great as well. BrainSlayer is awesome, but it does seem OpenWrt is ahead for these. OpenWrt 18.06 builds fully support both of them (some exceptions of Linksys' mediocre mwlwifi open source driver that doesn't do CPU or RF scaling, MU-MIMU, or a few other things) otherwise it works great. I assume these limitations are the same on DD-WRT.

Openwrt/LEDE also say they know what the issue is with the wrt1900ac v1 and the 4.9 kernel and have a build out with the fix. I would suspect that the davidc502 builds had it. Hopefully BS will look at what they have done and incorporate. _________________ Unifi Security Gateway:Unifi Firmware Netgear r7800:Voxel Firmware Modem:Netgear CM500V voice and Data. Would you recommend the ac86u over the r7800?
A friend of mine loaned me his WRT3200ACM, to see if I could get it working decently. We swapped, I gave him one of my AC86U's to use in the meantime. Apparently, I now have to wait for him to buy an AC86U before I get mine back. lol.............. _________________ My "WRT" rant, and why I have gone ddwrt on x86, no more consumer routers. Use the 1900ac with the stable wifi driver. 06/06/2017
Works like always.
The 3200acm is basically the same wifi. _________________ WRT3200ACM openwrt 18.06.5

Wrt's are crap compared to my AC86U's. _________________ My "WRT" rant, and why I have gone ddwrt on x86, no more consumer routers. ( ac86u as access points & bridges )
I'm running the latest firmware. From some time ago the ddwrt firmware has an issue with wifi. Essentially it works for 2-3 days then it dies and it needs a reboot. Landline works like charm.
Has any1 had anything similar to this? Any hints what to do ?
