Hello,
I have recently managed to flash a DD WRT firmware on my old netgear AC1000 router and using it as a repeater bridge. I am a noob when it comes to configuring networking equipment but the tutorials were perfect for beginners! Till now it has been working really good and I appreciate the hard work the DD WRT community for sharing such amazing resources.

Then I came across several blogs about entware/optware/opkg packages for setting up transmission on ddwrt routers! But very limited resource when it comes to newer mega builds. all threads and tutorials seem to be from 2011 and for Atheros based devices. Can anyone guide me to a tutorial or assist me in setting up on my router?

Thanks in advance.

My Device:
Netgear WNDR3400v1 as repeater bridge
2TB USB HD on NAS (mounted on /mnt)
Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r29440 mega (04/11/16)

I assume you have already checked out the wiki.
https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Category:Optware
Edit: It would probably be a good idea to upgrade to a newer build. May be enhancements and KRACK fix added. Check out some of the new build threads such as https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=315575 for reports on your box.

Thank u for stopping by! Smile

I am actually having a hard time understanding my build, and the different boards. is the WNDR3400v1 Atheros or Broadcom? I see urs WNDR3700v4 which is Atheros. I had seen several sections mentioning newer builds are incompatible with repeater bridge/usb function etc. I am just paranoid if I brick my device and mess it up... Crying or Very sad trying to go safer way. I followed this tutorial coz it confirmed everything working - https://forum.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=880388

I dont mind using older build as long as its stable. So looking for ways to get transmission working on my current build

according to this https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices yours is broadcom. I can't blame you for not fixing what is'nt broke.
I had no trouble after following the Instuctions for atheros found here. https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Installing_Entware
My best guess is the broadcom section would work also.

Nope....WNDR3400v1 only has a 8 meg flash....& transmission is one of the few/many things omitted

To djentlguy

I never tried to install transmission, but may I recomend build WNDR3400v1 dd-wrt.v3.0-r35531_mega-nv64k (03/26/18 )?
It has run stable for me plus I have tested it to work as a client bridge & as a repeater bridge

I was going to point out where to find his builds but being a broadcom ignoramus I was not sure exactly where to point besides the ones recommended in the thread he referenced. I really have no clue about the V3,K2.6,mini,big,mega,K3 et al part of this broadcom thing.

To be more clearer....for the WNDR3400v1...

https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2018/03-26-2018-r35531/broadcom_K3X/dd-wrt.v24-35531_NEWD-2_K3.x_mega-nv64k.bin

Assuming you are coming from any other dd-wrt build of course

That build type was where I was going to point but was not sure that was compatible with his existing build.
Thanks @ DR_K, that clears it up.

Its amazing how the community members came forward to help out! *big shoutout*

@Dr_K & bushant
Razz Very Happy Thank you for the suggestion! I will try to do a firmware update. One question, I see option for "dont reset" on the flash window. Will this preserve all my existing settings and configuration if I proceed?

Also, this page for the router - https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_WNDR3400 seems outdated then. since the highest version shown is 33772.

However, going back to my original question... (scratching-my-head) I still need some help with transmission. Embarassed Does the above build has built in ? or is there an easier way to get it up and running with my NAS. Any instruction would be helpful...

Thanks!

P.S. I tried looking for a "thanks" button, but couldnt find anything Razz

The only part of this I can help with is "don't reset" should preserve your settings. I have screenshots of mine in case of disaster. You will find much controversy here about resets. I never do but mine are atheros.
New builds have been coming out every 6-10 days so keeping the wikis updated would be monumental. That is why it is important to read the individual build threads. There have been about 25 BS builds this year + all the Kong builds.
About the transmission deal I don't use it so *easiest* is probably buy a supported device with more flash that has it built in Laughing

@Bushant & @Dr_K
I updated my firmware and it went like a breeze. And yes, it did preserve all my settings, so thanks much! Smile

@Bushant
ME: trying to take the less *easy* road not taken lol Razz
I understand it might not be the best scenario to set up transmission on this router, but it would be great if I get some help setting up optware. plus load average is <12% Wink . I did find several resources where installation of transmission is give... but my first hurdle now is getting opkg/optware installed.

original tut: https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Optware,_the_Right_Way

so, this is the first tutorial: https://www.howtogeek.com/98408/how-to-install-additional-software-on-your-router-dd-wrt/ and then https://www.howtogeek.com/100142/how-to-install-the-transmission-bitorrent-client-on-your-router-dd-wrt/

However, what I am stuck now is understanding a few things :

1.there is option of /opt /mnt options in the USB settings. I see it is required to have /opt or /jffs set up to install optware. But people claim to set it up on /mnt/sda_part1/some_drive (my case with an ext hd in NTFS format). Can anyone throw some light, if I am heading the right way? Can I proceed following the below steps if I want to install optware on my ext hd? Do I need to format my hard disk as ext2 for the /opt mount to work? Crying or Very sad

tut video ref: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bs02zzlw6PE

instructions I found:
Code:
cd /mnt
mkdir /mnt/opt
mkdir -p /mnt/data/torrents
mount /mnt/opt /opt
wget http://www.3iii.dk/linux/optware/optw... -O /tmp/optware-install.sh
sh /tmp/optware-install.sh
/opt/bin/ipkg-opt -verbose_wget install transmission
/opt/bin/transmission-daemon -g /mnt/data/torrents/.config/transmission-daemon
killall transmission-daemon
wget http://www.3iii.dk/linux/optware/sett... -O /mnt/data/torrents/.config/transmission-daemon/settings.json
/usr/sbin/iptables -I INPUT 1 -p tcp --dport 25000 -j logaccept
/opt/bin/transmission-daemon -g /mnt/data/torrents/.config/transmission-daemon

2. I tried to use wget via ssh but it seems the terminal is not resolving any web address.
Code:
e.g. $ wget http://www.3iii.dk/linux/optware/optware-install-ddwrt.sh /tmp/optware-install.sh

does not do anything. Nothing downloads. I tried pinging www.google.com but no response. Sad
Is it because router set up as repeater bridge?
Question

primary router: 192.168.0.1
|
dd wrt router: 192.168.0.111
WAN: disabled
gateway:192.168.0.1
Local DNS: 192.168.0.1
Op mode: Router

Thanks in advance!

I followed the instructions found here: https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Installing_Entware for atheros. Broadcom is slightly different but covered there. I formatted 8gig usb ext2. made "2"- 4 gig partitions, named 1 optware and the other jffs. It just worked. Entered the uuid's in appropriate place in SERVICES>USB. This wiki says ntfs will work. Might be worth making a small ext2 partition on your HDD and name it optware.
Once you have it mounted I think it is as easy as
"opkg install transmission???" probably have to find the appropriate package name.
Entware packages found here:http://bin.entware.net/mipselsf-k3.4/Packages.html

Obviously if you can't reach the world wide web none of this does you any good.
