So I have my two r6300v2 both and the WRT160N both on DD-WRT.

WRT160N v3 is on wiki original flash.

I have a ranch house and I have them strung out in the basement on the floor. My plans are to get everything locked in and run some wires upstairs. But for now I didn't quite have enough eithernet cable made up, so I used the wrt160n kind of as a switch in the middle for now....just to join the strands. But it is set up as an AP. Using the wifi meter on my phone the signal is about the same strength right next to the wrt160n as the signal of the r6300v2 that is 30 feet away.

So i was going to upgrade to the latest version of dd wrt and hope there was an overclock or something and see if it was even worth using... At all.

So that's the first question, give up on it?

Second question if I was going to upgrade, using the link in the wiki, i found this.

dd-wrt.v24-17990_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_wrt160nv3.bin

I am trying to search, but I am not even sure how to navigate the forum to find that build thread.

So I wouldn't mind someone "teaching me to fish" and how to do that.

Or if its easier for you, just tell me what build to use.

Sorry , trying to search and learn and failing at that.

I'm currently running dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_std_nokaid_small.bin on my WRT160N (from the router database page at http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database and it's working reasonably well but doesn't seem to have ipv6 iptables support.

I was able to update to this with no problem just using the web UI firmware upgrade.

I'd also be interested in knowing if anyone knows of a newer build that is known to be stable on the WRT160N.

Latest builds can be found at: ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2016/10-06-2016-r30731/
Goto Broadcom_K26 directory and search for the trailed 160V3 build

You can als use a K3 build form the Broadcom_K3X directory this is a mega build which includes more functionalitity, but only use this if you really need it, it is not faster nor more stable

For My WRT320n I use build dd-wrt.v24-30471_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_wrt320n.bin which was stable I have not tested the latest

Thank you so much for your response in both threads. Seriously.

I think the peacock thread has me spooked. I just dont want to be a "tester" I dont have a jtag etc. Concerning the r6300v2's.

Concerning the WRT160N , I would only use this is as a wired AP, so nothing fancy needed. But if there was an overclock build, I would not mind risking frying this thing trying to get it to give all its got. I regretted not getting the better one since the day i bought it. I will try it! Thanks

I think i remember a statement that beta builds were fairly reliable... So you should be ok there, right? Ill give it a shot!

9:20 PM - I had it overclocked to 500 MHZ!!! If it melts, it melts! That little thing is putting out some signal!

before update It was at -55dBm standing next to it.Now its putting out near -35dBm!

9:24 PM Wait ..where did my signal go? ...lol... no more signal Did it melt?

9:30 PM Nope didnt melt it.. reset and a restore to stock 300 MHZ, works fine again. Signal is still better. -45 DbM

Just wanted to share my little experiment. Maybe I will split the difference at 400 MHZ and see how that goes tomorrow night.

Definately an Improvement, thank you! This is just a little router. I now have a bit of an addiction, I had been ordering these r6300v2's off Ebay for about $40 total. I found one on Amazon for $30 and couldnt stop myself. So the little WRT160Nv3 will be saved for another day soon. I know the r6300v2's dont have the power of thise new tri band's and stuff, but I am not a gamer, I just want coverage around my house and in the yard. I think they are doing great! Feel free to correct me. Not sure what features you experts need, but my phone works everywhere now. 3g is really all I Need.

There's no directory for the 160N (only the NL).

Problem with this old thing is it only has 4MB of flash so it's stuck with mini or a stripped down version of standard. Apparently that will only get me ipv6 support with no ip6tables.

I guess I'm either going to have to get a new router, or turn this thing into an AP only and use a raspberry PI for all the fancy stuff.

I am a newb. I grasp what an ip table is, but don't know how to use it.

DD WRT SIGNIFICANTLY increased the signal even on 300 overclock, but I remember spending $40 bucks on this thing 8 years ago and immediately regret that. Its a little thing. Its good for one room and maybe an ajoining room.

See my signature, but i found these r6300v2's on ebay for $30-$40 bucks. I feel like that was affordable for the massive increase and 5g. I guess they are cheap around me because its what our cable company gives out standard.

Anyone is welcome to step up and tell me why I am an idiot. But I am pretty happy at this time.

Can the WRT160N v3 be used as an access point? Do I need to upgrade to DD-WRT to make this work?
Thanks!

I never used mine as an access point on linksys firmware though you can look for bridged mode under wan settings.

I would recommend you flash to ddwrt 14929 its stable on this router and easy to setup as access point just follow wiki
