Status: Buggy
Reset: No
Errors: OpenVPN server is broken since it was updated to 2.4 rc1

Router: wndr3700 v1
Firmware: 30949 - 2016/12/15
Status: bricked
Reset: yes
Errors: no web gui, blinking green power light, no telnet, ping works.

I noted a couple of replies here with success for wndr3700 v1 so went ahead. This is the second of two of these routers I have. It was factory, applied r30471 factory, then 30949 webflash which bricked it

Update:
Router recovered.
Installed windows 7 tftp (via "add windows features").
Assigned static address within 192.168.1.0/24 subnet to PC
The router was showing flashing green power light. I had performed a reset by unplugging power to router, holding in reset, plugging power back in and holding reset for 45 seconds. After letting go of reset i did not restart the router. Check that the router is replying to ping on 192.168.1.1. In this state I ran the tftp command
tftp -i 192.168.1.1 PUT WNDR3700-V1.0.16.98.img
it is important to note that this DID NOT work with the dd-wrt image (bin file). The router only accepted the tftp PUT using the Netgear factory firmware. After the image was sent, the router rebooted itself and the standart Netgear gui was accessible. I then went ahead and applied the 30949 dd-wrt factory image and the update worked.

I think the lesson for me is that any future firmware updates will be with the factory dd-wrt bin image after returning to Netgear firmware.

You mention two identical routers. When updating initially was the dd-wrt GUI used to update both units? If so, did the update brick both or just one? I ask because I was about to update the same model router when I saw this posting. I noiw wonder if using tftp PUT would avoid the issue while maintaining settings?

No such issue with the same router. On the 5GHz band, the SSID is broadcasted and I'm able to connect without issue. you will see someone earlier posted:

Won't work if using HT40 on both radio with specific channel selection.

Looks like that is indeed the issue. I've changed the channel on the 5GHz to auto and all is fine now. Thank you all.

TP-Link WDR4900 V1
Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r30949
Status: Stable
Reset: Nope
Previous Firmware: DD-WRT v3.0-r29621 std (05/10/16)

I was pretty happy with r29621, no issues for what I am using, there are 3x 8 port gigabit switches behind this router with a lot IP cams and a CCTV system, and a windows Plex server. This was the most stable version for me for long time that’s why I didn’t update in between.

For your information why I went to r30949;
I also had issue with my 5GHz last night, but it had nothing to do with r30949 and nor with r29621, last night when I was on r29621, I got myself a new VPN provider and from what I hear it was a good provider to use with DD-WRT firmware, so I set the VPN up in de VPN client section, and indeed it was working perfect, but after applying and a reboot the 5GHz went down and never came back, even after deleting information from the VPN client section didn’t help.

Unfortunately my last config backup was year old and I added lot things since then on my network with different settings on CCTV system, server and a lot more, so I didn’t want to go back. Updated to r30949 but still same issue no 5GHz. Went back to r29621 of course it didn’t help either, so I was forced to use my year old nvrambak, but did screenshots of all settings so I could put it back. Anyways soon as I load the old nvrambak 5GHz started to work, Channel Width is still Dynamic after this, I put back all my settings manually and made a new nvrambak. Oh and I am on r30949 again, without issues at 5GHz side.

I am just sharing this to make people aware, it might help developers to narrow down the 5GHz problem. I am not sure if it has to do with VPN client settings or anything in coding, but I didn’t set back the VPN client anymore, 5GHz is more important for me than VPN, I can set that on devices itself.

2nd router was purchased as a development unit so I don't loose VPN for weeks if I mess up the 1st router.

1st router (still running r30432) has some weirdness with pptp vpn and accessing local lan so I wanted to use the 2nd unit to test. I'd already bricked the 1st router a month ago by applying r30880 webflash (via dd-wrt web gui). I was able to recover it with the Boot Wait feature eventually.

Hence 2nd router came along, once bitten twice shy. Sequence of events (all on 2nd router):
1) unboxed router, it was reset to default with factory Netgear firmware.
2) I upgraded using the netgear gui to r30432 using file wndr3700-factory.img. This was successful
3) I then upgrade again to r30949 via dd-wrt gui using file wndr3700-webflash.bin. This bricked the router. Boot wait was not working. Telnet was not working. Green power light flashing as mentioned above.
4) after many hours of messing around i almost gave up. I was trying tftp (windows version) and another one called tftp2 but using the dd-wrt bin file. As soon as i tried the Netgear factory img file it worked. The router rebooted itself into netgear web gui.
5) I then went on and applied r30949 wndr3700-factory.img (note: same version that bricked but this is the dd-wrt factory img file not the webflash). This was successful.
6) I cheered
7) Perhaps the thing to do is to try the webflash upgrade, if it does not work fall back to the tftp recovery. It worked very quickly once i finally tried the netgear img factory file. It won't retain any dd-wrt settings though

You should be able to tftp a dd-wrt factory .img in to the router successfully.

Why would anyone think it was a good idea to use a release candidate of something (OpenVPN) as part of another product (dd-wrt)??

Seems like asking for trouble to me.

many release candidates end up very stable, same for "beta" & even alpla versions. theres also the consideration of broken features due to the way it was added in ddwrt rather than the feature itself, not everything thats broken is a result of the feature itself being broken, its a mix of both

Yes, but if it's still called a release candidate that means at this stage nobody knows if it's any good or not. Once they know they will change it's name to release.

Router: WNDR3700v1
Firmware: 30949 - 2016/12/15
Status: Buggy
Reset: No
Errors: OpenVPN server is broken due to mtu-disc not being supported by the OS. Even when manually started, the VPN connection is really unstable. Wi-Fi is flaky and worse than r28111. Near router I can't get more than 160 Mbps on 5GHz.

Dude, you downloaded this release of ddwrt from an FTP folder named "betas", what are you doing using it? Razz

Router: TP-Link TL-WR1043ND v2.1
Firmware: 30949 - 2016-12-15
Status: all good so far
Reset: erase nvram before - reset to factory during upgrade - erase nvram after

Disclaimer: not using OpenVPN at the moment, so can't comment on that issue, everything I'm using works flawlessly.
