I just got several new ac88u units.

I'm installing the build from here:
ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2016/12-15-2016-r30949/asus-rt-ac88u/asus_rt-ac88u-firmware.trx

I can't get it to boot so I finally connected a console and it appears it kernel panics when loading the wl module:

This build works great on my older units
I suspect the difference is that the AC88u now ships with a updated wireless card:

0001:01:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM43142 802.11b/g/n (rev 04)

Where as my old units have:

0001:01:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM43142 802.11b/g/n (rev 03)

Unfortunately I have no way to order the older units. I just get them through amazon/distribution and there is no way to tell which unit I'm going to get until I get it. The new units I get seem to all be the rev04 version which work fine, but ddwrt doesnt boot.

Is there anything I can do to get these units working?

I may have the same issue with my AC88U. Mine is hardware version A5. I'm not sure how to check the version of the network controller.

I reverted back to ASUS stock firmware until I figure out which DD-WRT version works on it. For now, this is the only router I have that is not running DD-WRT.

Same exact issue here, and mine also has a rev 04 BCM43142.

Finally made an account here. I just got an AC88U, and after reading this thread, checked my own router that has been having the same failures to boot when DDWRT is pushed.

And sure enough, it is an A5 with a BCM43142 Rev 04.

No wonder DDWRT wouldn't load, but Merlin did. Shocked

Guess I'll ride out on Merlin until we get an A5-friendly update.
