I have 100Mbps service and without VPN connected achieve 100+Mpbs consistently. VPN installed on my computer itself, speed tests go down by a fairly reasonable amount (~80Mbps) but if I set up the VPN on my router (Buffalo wzr-1750dhp) instead of my computer, the speeds take a huge hit. I have tried 2 providers (pure vpn and unlimited vpn), multiple cities, multiple protocols (openvpn, pptp) yet cannot seem to achieve anything above about 20Mbps speed. I'm using one of the relatively recent kong builds.

Is this router just too slow? Has anyone else achieved better?

I'm experiencing the same issue on a Netgear WNDR3700 router running DD-WRT v3.0-r31825 std (04/06/17).

Not much help, I know, but I'll be watching this topic for any suggestions.

I also have the WZR-1750DHP, but it does not have DD-WRT on it, but yet I am experiencing nearly the same issue. However, while slow, in many cases applications cannot reach their destinations for doing things like streaming music, or downloading files, while many web sites can be reached just fine.

This seems to apply when OpenVPN is setup to redirect internet traffic in and out of the VPN.

Oddly some Android applications can reach their destination just fine without issue.

This must be a hardware issue.

What kind of VPN are you using? PPTP, L2TP or OpenVPN?

These are listed in increasing order of CPU usage. The speeds you may be seeing may be due to the hardware limitation in your router.

I have figured it out on my end. It is a firewall issue. You have to set VPN Passthrough to on.

Edit: Maybe I have spoken too soon. Acting up again. I am also using OpenVPN
