I am on hardware in signature and very noobe to DD-WRT

Is it absolutely necessary to reset before and after update from older DD-WRT to earlier DD-WRT ??

If yes ... may I backup the configuration and restore later ?

I have introduced a lot of settings that I would like reuse ...
Thanks
Paolo

I never reset unless I run into problems, and even then a reset has never fixed them as they've been problems in the build itself

Basically I have never in all the years of running DD-WRT found a bug that a reset has fixed, nor caused a bug by not resetting

----
WRT160NL - BAD
Firmware size too big again, exactly the same size as the last one

naah you do not use save file from different builds, it's not a good practice, as different builds may have different nvram locations,
but if you know how to unbrick your unit, you can do everything you want with it... i personally rebuild manually to evade any confrontations...

Hey I noticed in your sig you use BS build for your R7800 vs Kong. Any reason specific?

Atheros 7K is kinda bugged in last builds, WNDR3700 loses alot of throughput and stability if compared to the standard factory firmware...

I'm able to push 50 Mbit/s w/ 5.4ghz and around 50 Mbit/s w/ 2.4 ghz by using factory firmware, but when using dd-wrt with nothing else turned on and "as a bridge" no NAT, no VPN, no QOS, it cuts this throughput almost in half... Not sure why is this, also sometimes the connection is lost, there are wifi drops...

I'm always using WPA2 + AES and N Only mode, never anything different, also I've tried with HT40 but it gets even more unstable, while with HT20 it is somewhat a bit more stable.

Sad but this is the current situation on WNDR3700v1, I had to revert one of them back to factory firmware, because of these problems. Sad Sad

What's your internet speed ?

Do you have more than one unit ?

Do you link they together (In Client Bridge (Routed) ???) ?

Do you get "constant" speed in all Speed Tests you make, or does it vary when you do it multiple times ?

In my experience, the wifi connection/performance in both bands isn't reliable, it works, but it is not 100% reliable, mainly when you compare it with the stock/factory firmware...

The WNDR3700v4 is by far a much better unit than the v1 or V2 ....and the broadcom V3 -- still in the brick pile not worth fixing

Yes it does ok in client bridge mode. It is stable using either band... not something I use all time but have left them bridged for days without a problem.

haven't found any problems w/r31899.
openVPN server - good
SAMBA share - good
QOS - good
VAPs on both bands - good
Recursive DNS Resolver - good
It is still just 2 x 2 radio but better than the other version. Also different CPU.
If you have high speed internet (75+) you should invest in a much better unit... but if not then the wndr3700v4 will do
just about anything you need. A laptop NIC that will do HT40 on 2.4 will easily do 75 Mbps with it.

The point is not investing in a better unit, but the firmware working at least as the stock firmware (at least in bridged mode)... And right now it isn't close to it yet, not with the current problems/issues. As I said, the factory firmware works fine, there are some features only existing in dd-wrt of course, but I think, before cosmetics and new features are worked on, the core (kernel, nat and wireless) has to be working flawlessly.

Sorry can't help you there since the wndr3700v1 & V2 are not even close to the same as the v4.
I will throw this out -- Client Bridge is a real crappy bridge. Using 31899 (although stable) I can only get 50 Mbps across bridge .. don't matter if using 2.4 or 5GHz.
WDS-AP | WDS-Sta using two wndr3700v4 I get 90Mbps.

Didn't knew client bridge was so bad this way. Sad
