Hi,
I am a NOVICE interested in and just learning about VPN. I tried IPVanish on WIN 10 Desktop for a few days. It seemed to work well except using IPV “find fastest server” setting and Google DNS, resolving was VERY slow at many sites….up to 12 seconds or so. So I cancelled that for now. I have decided however, that I want a router with client VPN.
Read a web article on Home Routers and VPN. I have a D-LINK DIR-825 Ver B1, and according to the DD-WRT Database it can be flashed. I am wondering if it’s worth flashing my router. It is a 7 yr. old router w 64 MB RAM and 8 MB Flash (specs attached). I am interested in fast no buffering anonymous Wi-Fi streaming and using multiple Wifi devices simultaneously. If my router would not perform well, I will consider buying a new VPN Client Router and keeping mine as a backup as I work through getting the new VPN running correctly.
I would sure like to hear your thoughts on all of this.
Thanks much! _________________ Tom P in Sunny Virginia Beach, Va

hmm your router will run VPN at very basic speeds as it has 680Mhz CPU it may struggle a but with strongest encryption and speed, for decent VPN speed you'd need a dual core CPU router like Netgear R7000, R7500, R7800 of course you can always give it a try and if so.. go get a decent router ...

I know this is off topic a little, but the 825 has been pretty solid for me (but I am not using vpn). So you could get experience with DD-WRT in general and try to set up vpn before you deploy it to the new router.
Think it will work well? Or should I cancel and get a Netgear?
Did i say Netgear ? There was a reason for that .....
Compare to Linksys WRT series Netgear R series are much more worry free with DD-WRT and performance/price is good as well.. _________________ Atheros

Well......I just checked and the order is on the way. I had ordered this before your Netgear advice. If I wanted the very best (for DD- WRT home use) what model/s Netgear R Series which would you recommend? Would it be the R7800, R9000 or what? I can send this Linksys back within 30 days.
Thanks much for your assistance! _________________ Tom P in Sunny Virginia Beach, Va

so far top performance is held by R9000, but consider his little brother R7800 kill's them all, so far nothing better than that, consider price/performance/range factor...also R7800 has a great stability and performance with DD-WRT, especially Kong builds....
