I have a Netgear WNDR3700v3 that is currently running DD-WRT v24-sp2 (03/25/13) mega SVN revision 21061. I have downloaded dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_mega-nv64k.bin to upgrade the firmware, but it doesn't seem to stick. The upgrade process seems to go fine; I see the success message. However, it immediately shows the screen telling me to change the default username and password; there's no screen with a continue button that I could wait for 5 minutes to click. The firmware version at this point has not changed. I have tried another hard reset when the router gets to this page, but still the same firmware version. What could be preventing me from upgrading this router?

Using the version numbers in your post, that is not an upgrade at all. Both versions are 21061, you would not get a revision change, or even a feature set change (both are mega).

I would suggest upgrading to at least 33772 (after the KRACK patch for Broadcom). That is the latest I have tested on my WNDR3700v3. Note, this router is fairly easy to brick. Note the warning on the wiki page here: https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_WNDR3700#v3

If you are coming from a very old build, I would suggest reset to factory defaults before and after upgrading.

Oh, I didn't realize the database is not to be used (why does it still exist then?). I went all the way back through 2017 and only found WNDR3700, v2, and v4. No v3. Is there an easier way to find the most recent build for my revision than trawling through the download directories?

Go to the broadcom K26 folder, upgrade using the mega nv64 build. Then upgrade to K3X (broadcom K3X folder), mega NV64, same build number.
See the link in my signature for more info. I would reset to defaults before and after every upgrade.
