I was searching for up to date builds for my router after success with the initial flash to DD-WRT and came across a beta version dated Feb 17 of this year that was specific to my router (https://download1.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/betas/2018/02-17-2018-r35034/broadcom/dd-wrt.v24_mega_special_wrt610n.bin). I figured I'd give it a try.
While it seems to be working, I can't connect via the 2.4GHz wlan using WPA2/AES. My password keeps getting rejected. I've unmasked the password on the router and on my phone so I'm positive I'm typing it in correctly.
I am able to connect to my other router (using manufacturer's firmware) and the setting look to be the same (WPA2/AES only).
I've done some more testing with the following results:
1) the recommended initial flash firmware as per the WRT610N wiki page (ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2010/08-12-10-r14929/broadcom/dd-wrt.v24_mega_wrt610n.bin) gives the same error for the 2.4GHz connection. It also reports that the 5GHz radio is off. I can't see the 5GHz network from my phone.
2) The recommended firmware from the router database (https://www.dd-wrt.com/routerdb/de/download/Linksys/WRT610N/1.0/dd-wrt.v24_mega_generic.bin/3726) reports that the 2.4GHz radio is off and doesn't show the 5GHz radio at all. I can't see either wireless network from my phone. The firmware seemed very unstable.
3) the original vendor firmware allows me to connect wirelessly from my phone using both 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

Are you sure you have a V1 of this router? I have a 610N and it works fine with both radios (have tried multiple versions)... _________________ 1 x Linksys WRT160n v3

Since it was not mentioned anywhere...you did reset after flashing, and manually set up DD, right? And only use "*-Mixed" wireless network modes, and not "*-only" modes. Don't use Mixed either, unless it's the only option. _________________ #NAT/SFE/CTF: limited speed w/ DD#Repeater issues#DD-WRT info: FAQ, Builds, Types, Modes, Changes, Demo#

jtrotsky: It says it's version 1 and the manufacturer's firmware that it is currently running is for version 1 - the same as the one it had been running before I started playing with it.
jwh7: It's not actually clear what "Supported by" in the router database means. I'd assumed it pointed to versions that were known to work well with the specific router. Of course, my experience shows that assumption was incorrect. I also note that on the "Other downloads" page it plainly states "To obtain the matching version for your router please use the Router Database".
I'm pretty sure that I did a 30-second reset after each flash. That leaves DD-WRT in a pretty plain state so I then set it up with a proper password, dchp limits and WPA2 Personal. I can't remember the exact mixed modes I used, but they were probably generic. I also tried auto and shared key only on the security negotiations.
One thing that has become clear to me is that I can't find good information on the site about which firmware to use. The only ones that look to be less than a decade old are in the "Betas" download section. Nolimitz suggested 33555 which is from last October. From the various hints in the WRT610N wiki, I gather a 2.6 kernel would be appropriate but I'm unsure of why big is larger than mega let alone the difference between nv60k and nv64k.

FYI - I just checked what version I currently have on my 610n and is 18946. It's used daily for media streaming. Normally, only the 5Ghz radio is used (in client bridge mode), but I just enabled the 2.4Ghz radio in AP mode (N-Only) using AES for security and it worked fine.
I had previously used both radios as my main AP and had no issues (I now use an Asus AC router as my main AP).

Thanks jtrotsky. I've been trying to download a newer version (the 33555 that nolimitz suggested) but the download1.dd-wrt.com server doesn't seem to be responding right now.

It refers (roughly) to the minimum supported version, but it's not good at that either. The Supported_Devices wiki is the real reference for that. Unfortunately, none of us can change the main DD site.

Ya, it's a pain...you have to research new build and device-specific threads, other users (like nolimitz), and the wiki (though they usually show old info). 33555 seems like a good start, but to repeat myself from another recent thread...
And ya, 18946 is also normally good. Note the Broadcom krack fixes are in 33772, but apparently that doesn't work on the 610N (from what nolimitz said). And krack only really matters for fast-auth and client/repeater modes. _________________ #NAT/SFE/CTF: limited speed w/ DD#Repeater issues#DD-WRT info: FAQ, Builds, Types, Modes, Changes, Demo#

OK, I think I've figured it out now. The problem was at my end, not understanding that DD-WRT has a bizarre user interface convention. At the bottom of most pages are 3 buttons labeled "Save", "Apply Settings" and "Cancel Changes". In every other system I can think of, "Save" applies the settings and records them permanently. "Apply Settings" would apply them without recording them, in case you wanted to try something without making it permanent.
In DD-WRT, "Save" actually appears to do nothing. The setting isn't applied and isn't made permanent. Next time I visit a page, the settings I saved have vanished. Conversely, if I apply them, they seem to be permanent.
Because I wasn't always applying settings (I frequently would just save them), changes I thought I'd made weren't being applied.
I don't know if this continues to more recent versions (I'm currently running DD-WRT v24-sp2 (08/12/10) mega - build 14929), but if it does (as suggested by my other experiences) then I'd consider this a significant design flaw.

Actually, the Save button *does* (or at least should) save the setting permanently - *without* applying them. This allows you to make a bunch of changes and not actually "activate" them until you either push the Apply button or reset the router.
It's actually a great setup - and I wish other firmware had the same flexibility. A lot of firmware has no way to save the setting without applying them...
If the Save button isn't permanently saving the settings, then something is wrong... _________________ 1 x Linksys WRT160n v3

Running now with a 2.4 kernel build 33555 since there was a WRT610N version available while the 2.6 kernel only had a generic Broadcom version. Everything seems to be working nicely.
