I have a TP-Link WDR3600 with dd-wrt setup.

The Firmware is: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (03/25/13) std.

I've been trying to setup the OpenVPN to connect to NordVPN servers through my login info. I used the instructions here:

https://nordvpn.com/tutorials/dd-wrt/openvpn-gui/

I have not been able to get it up and running, though. Anyone have experience with this?

Try the Tutorials in dd-wrt's wiki: https://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Category:OpenVPN

They are definitely using an old version of dd-wrt, the tab is now VPN, not OpenVPN.

Upgrade your router first, see the link in my signature. I am currently running 35452 on my WDR3600. Don't expect a VPN speed though, ~20MiB/s would be my guess.

Thanks for the help! I flashed the router & will look through the tuts. Any one in particular I should be following?

Maybe you can advise further?

I have Uverse service at home and a NAS setup as well.
I'd like to stream video & audio from my NAS outside the home, eventually, but thought the first step should be getting a router setup with VPN.

Do you think this router is too slow to accomplish something like this? Is trying to run through a VPN at all just going to be too slow?

Yes, this router is too slow for a NAS + VPN setup. I would not expect it to be able to handle even a 1080p video without lag over VPN. If you are OK with ~20MiB/s download and upload speed, through the VPN, then by all means the router will do fine. Don't expect much more than that though, 50MiB/s through a VPN is not possible on that router.

I would seriously suggest getting a dual-core router such as a Netgear R7800: https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Nighthawk-Gigabit-Ethernet-Compatible/dp/B0192911RA/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1522421960&sr=1-3&keywords=NETGEAR+R7800

Bummer. So what guidelines should I be looking for in a router? I don't mind shopping around and looking for the best deal.

Should I be looking for just any dual-core router, cross-referencing with the forum for dd-wrt compatibility?

Or are there other guidelines I should be looking for?

There is always this thread: https://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=87868

Most will suggest Netgear R7800. Don't get a Linksys, just an extra hassle now.

Dual-core, Atheros chipset.

Check the wikidevi page for it: https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Main_Page
And check a recent build thread if anybody is using one.
Also, it is a good idea to check the ftp site (see my signature for links) to verify that the router is supported.

Thanks again.

I went ahead and picked up the Netgear router used on ebay. DD-WRT was already flashed to it, r29695M. It's a little difficult to figure out how to navigate the forums efficiently, so I thought I'd ask what's the current "working" build for this router.

I went to the thread indicated on the wikidevi page, but with the kong builds, etc. (even though I've read through the stuff linked in your signature), it can be a little overwhelming. Just trying not to brick my router!

Thanks for your patience!

Read the build threads, such as this: https://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=314562

Also, read the link in my signature.

Kong builds may be of interest as well.
