Everything went fine to point 5. ("Open your browser to http://192.168.1.1. A hard reset may leave you at a page titled MANAGEMENT MODE. If so, power cycle the router and reload. You should be in the Factory Setup GUI.")
Effectively, the router showed me the message "MANAGEMENT MODE". When I re-start the router, I can no longer access the WEB-GUI. 192.168.1.1 does not respond, the router has the ip 192.168.1.100 (I can do a PING to that address but nothing else. I can not access it with the browser, not with SSH)

What is your plan with such an ancient device?
Don't expect amazing speeds from it. Don't even plan on using it for VPN (~1Mb/s).
I would suggest setting a static IP on your computer (192.168.1.60 for example) then try accessing the router at either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.100. _________________ Before asking a question on the forums, update dd-wrt: Where do I download firmware? I suggest reading it all.
