...I also learned the hard way NOT to uncheck HTTP and check only HTTPS under the HTTPS web access, protocol section under the Administration > Management tab, erroneously thinking that would make my router more secure.

I found this thread, and tried telnetting in, but it said no answer or unavailable on port 23. I'm guessing telnet is not started by default in r46447? If not, I never probably enabled it, so how are we supposed to telnet in? Anyways I had to reset.

But, for the future, how do we have telnet available on our routers without a security risk that would allow any old Rando to telnet in and start trying to hack the name/password?

Also, what the heck IS the telnet name/pass? It's not the same as the admin login/pass I've set to login the web interface.

Telnet is by default enabled.
Username is always root, password is the one you have set

Q: I did install DD-WRT on my router but when I try to access the control panel via my web browser with the address http://192.168.1.1 as username and a password is required. What do I have to enter?
A: The default username / password combination is “root” / “admin”.

most of the nowadays browsers omit/deny http connections...so, you have to fiddle with your browser settings...moreover in order to establish connection... https ddwrt certificate must be accepted..in you browser...

I always use Pale-Moon browser when using DDWRT...
