Hello. Long-time DD-WRT user here. I'm currently using an EA8500. I have a technical background. But, networking is not a specialty.

I recently signed up with Ting fiber-to-home internet which offers Gigabit speed.

But, I'm getting very odd behavior. It appears that I'm somehow capping out at 100 Mbits/s. For instance, if using torrents, the cumulative download speed will never exceed 100 Mbit/s. AND if that speed is reached, all other internet activity gets heavily bogged down (ie. can barely browse any site).

Is this some kind of traffic shaping from Ting?

Or, another possibility is misconfiguration of the network card on the client computer side? It does seem like the machine itself is in 100BaseT mode or something.

Any advice on steps I can take to test my setup and determine where the bottleneck is coming from?

Update:

I discovered the issue!

The LAN cable that Ting provided from modem to router had a funky fit into the router. So, it was only connecting at 100baseT.

After moving it around some, it connected to 1000baseT and is now running correct speeds.

Moral of story: check the cables for NON-obvious issues.
