I am trying to use 5ghz wlan0 to connect to another wireless ap but seems like I cant get it to work. I have tried to use 2.4ghz to connect to another wireless ap and it works without any issue. Unfortunately the new wireless ap only have 5ghz. I wonder what did I set wrong? I even go to AP mode and change to the same channel and go back to Station mode. I able to detect the wireless network via survery.

Don't select WPA, but WPA2 only.

my best advice is to revert to build 51589 for your 7800 STA/wds sta

https://svn.dd-wrt.com/ticket/7669

you can also try choosing channel 100.

You could try deleting all VAPs, but in latest k6 builds i don't think taht even matters, the link will never come up

you dont note what build you are using, you are missing some options that make me believe its old.

Avoid "ONLY" network modes as they have caused problems in the past.
Try " Mixed" or "AC/N Mixed".

The upstream AP is using channel 48, why on earth would you think that you could use another channel? Rolling Eyes

What i meant was change the upstream to channel 100 or revert to 51589, this is a bug tha i have not been able to get around without doing one of those two. I beleive it only affects the radio type of this router's 5GHz interface but o could be wrong. More details of testing and other reports are in the ticket.

All those misconfigs should be addressed regardless though.

Your tangent is irrelevant and has nothing to do with the misconfiguration in the OP.

The post is about not being able to get STA Mode working on a 7800. I am just trying to save the poster some time, Yes all those are misconfigs and should be fixed regardless. But... it probably still wont work unless he reverts the build or changes teh upstream to channel 100. its not irrelevant, its just a bug that im posting the workarounds for.

Did you address any other suggested configuration changes?

At most, all you should have to do is set Station mode, upstream router SSID, wpa2 personal, ccmp-128, wifi password of upstream AP, regulatory domain, and maybe BSSID.

I meant I cannot make any changes to the Wireless AP which provides the Internet access. Anyway I just used another router Linksys EA8100 and it worked with OpenWRT. I flashed r7800 to openwrt too, yea the 5ghz still not working somehow. Wonder whether it is just hardware which might be just incompatible.

You don't have to do anything with the channel on either end - not even assign the channel on the Station node, don't know what that whole nonsense is about other than "over-configuration".
