Yes it refers to Spanning Tree Protocol. The reason it is recomended that Comcast cable Internet users should not enable this feature is because it could cause their cable modems to repeatedly "flood the network" each time they get firmware/profile updates. When these changes are pushed to their cable modems their network routing changes. STP handles these changes but at present fails to compensate approriately for artificially created situations like this with such massive routing changes. STP also requires acknowledgement frames which certain cable headends cannot send while still following the legacy mode methods that preceded the DOCSISĀ® (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) cable infrastructure standard.

An easier to follow explanation of Spanning Tree Protocol can be found at http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,290660,sid7_gci214602,00.html

The above should be moved to the article page itself, for it makes a lot more sense than what's on there right now. Conversely, the back-and-forth banter on the article page should either be moved here or < !--commented-- > out. VoxLuna 12:02, 24 Jun 2006 (CEST) 143985755168313261739483
