I use Linux. I recently bricked my WRT54GS v5.1 by trying to convert its CFE to a 128k. All all the LAN port lights are constantly on, and the power light is flashing.

I bought a JTAG off Ebay and used tjtag v3.0.1 on Linux to try and reflash the CFE.BIN that I backed up before I tried to convert its CFE from 256k to 128k. Reflashing appeared to be OK, no problems but as above, the lights remains on whilst the power light flashes. What does this mean?

I've tried erasing the NVRAM and the KERNEL, but that made no difference,

Anything else I can try? Many thanks!

You need to flash firmware. See note 11 of the peacock announcement. Note 6 might be helpful too, as might the jtag wiki article.

I take it you did have dd-wrt on it when you backed up the cfe?

backup the cfe on the box with jtag.. compare it to the cfe file you flashed (the one you backed up to begin with). The must be identical.

My guess.. you had a bad backup or a bad jtag flash.

Always backup twice & compare before you do anything. If the two backups don't match, you do not have a good backup.

Thank you, it was a bad backup :S. After ftping a known good CFE from barryware's site, and tftped it into router, all is now well.

I have learnt a lot from going through all this. I feel like I've achieved something at last.

Now I'd like to fix the CFE so it is 128K as I'd like to get SSH rather than telnet working on this router.

Many thanks for the kind help offered. That JTAG was worth every penny!

Glad you got it sorted out..

In regards to using ssh & telnet to replace the cfe..

One small problem.. You need a micro build that also has ssh in order to ssh the cfe to the routers tmp folder.

There is no micro build that has ssh if using a 256k cfe. You must run micro + ssh. That requires a 128k cfe..

kinda a catch 22, chicken or egg thing..

So.. you can either run the cfe compressor as you stand, or jtag a compressed cfe.

the compressed cfe must be named cfe128.bin and the jtag command is -flash:cfe128

have fun..

That's why I've volunteered to help in the CFE compressors thread elsewhere in the Broadcom forum.

Many thanks

check the other thread.. the compressor thread.. There is a compressed cfe for your router.

I believe page 8 or so if the thread is when the development happened.

Can anyone point me at the part where it tells me where to hexedit the 128K CFE with the correct MAC addresses? Many thanks, been grepping for it without success!

Many thanks, I've now edited my 128K CFE with the original MAC addresses, then scp'd to the router, used mtd to write it into flash RAM, and rebooted.

Worked fine.

Thanks, I can now put the router back in service now!
